Recently my boyfriend and I took a trip to meet my family. Ben is tall, handsome, intelligent, and great with kids. Aside from one crazy aunt who tried to warn me about the evil glint in his eye, I knew that every other woman on my family tree would fall in love with him, and I desperately wanted their approval.

Ben came up with the plan. One on my aunts had a few little kids that were sweet and well-behaved. We would call and tell her that we had decided to go to the zoo and ask if she needed to take a break, we could handle the kids.

He called and my aunt Amber quickly agreed, but insisted that she would come anyways, since there wouldn’t be enough room in just our five-person car.

When we got to her house we were greeted by twelve screaming kids under the age of ten. Turns out, she was not only watching her own four children, but her sister’s eight. I was pulled into the kitchen to make a dozen sandwiches while Ben tried to calm the kids down enough to play some sort of game. When we finally left the house (an hour and a half later) Ben and I were to take four kids with us, double buckled into the car.

As we pulled out of the driveway, I found an old Disney album on my mp3 player, and turned on a song from Mary Poppins, satisfied that I at least had some kid music to make me seem cool. After a few minutes there was a little cough from the backseat. My five year-old cousin struggled to politely tell me that I had bad taste in music, and proceeded to list off the names of a dozen songs I had never heard of.

Her parents had taken to collecting several free music downloads a month, and listening to them in the car. The six year old that she was double buckled with then suggested that I turn off the radio, and the kids in back would just play a game. I didn’t use free music downloads, and suddenly I was an outsider. An outsider among children who had just started elementary school, too!

First, the kids played name that tune. In this game Kaylie would hum the tune of a free music download and then look at me expectantly. I would try to stutter the name of a song she had listed ten minutes earlier, and she would shake her head in disappointment. Then the other children would correctly guess it. But the songs that had been obtained via free music downloads weren’t all Indie bands, and on occasion she would hum something vaguely familiar. I would try to guess, they would shake their heads, and once, the three year old boy in the back seat put his hand on my seat and whispered the musicians name for me. Beyonce. My three year old cousin recognizes Beyonce?

These free music downloads were causing me a great deal of trouble. After a while Kaylie asked that I turn music on again, and said we could surf through the music until she heard something okay. After listening to the first ten seconds of 15 songs, she settled on Peter, Bjorn and John singing Young Folks and insisted that we listen to it on repeat until we reached the zoo, and the entire return trip.

The real pity is, we didn’t win over the aunts, because the young folks just weren’t satisfied, not with Ben, but with me.

engineer and alum of the Forestry School at Syracuse University
Andrew Lombardo (brother of Phil Lombardo ‘05), when he began
researching ways to create a downloading website that would
benefit not just downloaders, but musicians and advertisers as
well. After several years of research and hard work, his final
product, Zaziggy.com, is available for public use.

Zaziggy.com is a different kind of music downloading website.
With his self-run company, Rockstar Technologies, and his
partner Shirley Ma (a patent attorney) Lombardo has created a
partnership between advertisers, downloaders and up-and-coming
artists. The artists range in genre from acoustic, acoustic rock,
country, emo, hip hop, metal, piano, piano acoustic, pop, rap,
rock, surf and surf acoustic, to appeal to all sorts of music
interests.

To sign up, you simply have to go to Zaziggy.com and fill out a
brief survey, whose purpose is to pair your interests up with
an advertiser. The survey, which is worlds more fun than the
average demographics survey, allows users to get their music for
free. Here’s how Zaziggy works: while downloading a song a user
is paired up with an advertisement for a product based on his or
her interests, which are determined based on the survey. This
allows companies to target their advertisements to their desired
demographic. Additionally, artists receive a royalty each time
someone downloads one of their songs and they are able to access
the demographics of the people who like their music.

According to the website, “the money made off of the sponsored
download is split 50/50 with the artists,” who maintain artistic
control because Rockstar Technologies does not buy the rights
to the songs. Because they make money off of the downloads,
this website makes it possible for musicians to benefit from
a music downloading website. And the downloads are perfectly
legal. The best part is that each week new artists will be
added to the website, so users can always anticipate something
new. This way, Zaziggy.com provides a way for savvy people to
discover new music without having to listen to the radio.

The website, which features clever graphics and just the right
amount of humor, is easy and fun to use. Zaziggy.com indicates
the top downloads in each genre, and recommends artists that
you may like. Different artists are featured at the top of
the page, along with a short biography.

Cruisin’ With Dave Koz & Playboy Jazz Festival!

As a travel writer for Dunhill Vacations, I get to write about some real far out places. As exciting as some exotic escape to Asia or a brand new all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic, my favorite type of travel has always been cruising.  I enjoy the thought of being on a small city in the middle of the ocean.  I enjoy the sounds of the surf and the smell of the warm salty air. 

I was introduced to the wonderful world of jazz a little over 4 years ago on holiday up in St. Augustine, FL I stumbled upon a winery overlooking the oldest city in the US, listening to some Jazz. That moment has never left me and neither has my love of Jazz.

As a huge fan of Dave Koz, you can imagine my excitement when I found out about the 4th annual Dave Koz and Friends At Sea cruise.  I completely dropped the ball about reporting this last year, but I’m back on the good foot.  Dave Koz has been the first acts that I have ever seen perform live; and it was worth it.  The way he manipulates the sax into ’saying’ exactly what he wants it to say is mind blowing!  I spoke via the internet with a fellow fan that had gone two years ago on Dave’s cruise and he said that it was fabulous. 

Some of Dave’s friends will include Eric Benet, George Duke, Najee (another one of my personal favorites), Brian Simpson and other Grammy Award winning artists.  They will be getting the party started while making stops in Grand Turk, St. Thomas, St. Barth’s and Half Moon Cay.

The unveiled art/music of your own distinct beautiful expression/sound can not be heard, recognized or released until you are willing, able and ready to “nip in the bud” your caustic, pessimistic, doubtful attitude. Every over exaggerated action ends in non productivity. You are not standing so tall and secure that one good rapid wind may flatten you like a newly paved road. The form of who you think you are is being impetuously ripped asunder. The uninitiated artist within you beckons your soul to bow willingly naked, to the apparent contradictions in your present life. Every single aspect is being dissolved so that you may have an intravenous glimpse of what lies behind it. Stop trying to push a rope.

The many faces of intimate fraud are being exposed. What you thought was one thing is in fact altogether different. Set the armies marching against the elaborately disguised self-sabotaging mechanisms you contrive to halt your progress. Unless you institute the grave effort needed to abandon your tightly held coveted ideas and ways, you will remain unaware and paralyzed in your present perplexing state of crisscrossed cycles. This exhausting apex becomes a life and death struggle for you to release any personal power you think you have. Let it fizz out.

The thing you are looking for is a RECORDING STUDIO PROGRAM. And you’ll be using the MIDI tracks and either downloading MIDI drum files or programming them yourself using the computers mouse. Yes they import WAV into the audio tracks. And when youre finished doing the midi tracks you convert them to WAV as well.

What is Heavy Metal Music?

Heavy Metal Music developed in the late 1960s from rock music and in the last 40 years has emerged not only into its own genre, but a complete culture, as well.  It has broken off into dozens of sub-genres and has gained worldwide popularity with its unique style.

Classic heavy metal music is described as having a thick, massive sound that includes extended guitar solos, complex beats, amplified distortion and an overall loudness.  The main instruments in most groups are the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals and sometimes, keyboards.  While most groups focus on a vocalist as their frontman, heavy metal music, more often than not, uses the lead guitarist as the focus.

The guitarist in heavy metal music is key.  They perform extended metal riffs and usually lead the group.  While some metal guitarists use main power chords in their songs, most have studied classical music and have amazing abilities.  Some of the techniques used are alternate picking, string skipping, tapping, legato, sweep picking and economy picking.

Heavy metal music developed in the late 1960’s with groups such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.  From the origins of this new style of music emerged a huge sub-genre of music.  The lyrics of metal music tend to focus on dark or depressing subjects, including death, war, paranoia and personal trauma.  Some extreme forms of metal often focus on agressive or gory lyrics, while others focus on more philosophical themes.  A common theme in most metal is the idea of doing what you want, despite what the world says.

Genres of heavy metal music are as vast as the ideologies of each artist.  The most popular styles of heavy metal music include alternative metal, drone metal, funk metal, classic metal, grindcore, industrial metal, metalcore, neo-classical metal, nu metal, gothic, speed, post metal, rap metal, sludge metal and doom and death metal.  Each sub-genre brings in elements of other styles of music such as blues, rap, rock, alternative, folk, punk, hip hop and classical.

Visual appearance has always been a strong factor in heavy metal music.  Some groups, such as Kiss and Alice Cooper, have become known for their outlandish costumes and huge stage performances.

The classic dress of todays metalhead consists of long hair, past the shoulders, black t-shirt with a favored metal band logo, jeans, black boots and black leather jackets.  According to journalist Nader Rahman, long hair gave the members of the metal community “the power they needed to rebel against nothing in general”.

Heavy metal music is extremely masculine and, therefore, there is not the usual dancing at concerts.  Most of the audience will engage in headbanging or just make arm gestures.  Other displays may include “moshing”, stage diving or crowd surfing.
