Surf Lessons in Florida?
Our family will be in Satellite Beach (close to Cocoa Beach) the first week of August. Kids would like to learn to surf, and they have been Boogie boarding many times in Virginia. What tips do you have? Kids are 11 and 13, and dad, a veteran body boarder too, is 60 but wanting to give it a go too. Can you recommend a place for lessons and what kind of board to rent (foam?) for our week’s stay.
as there’s not much “tourism influence” in Satellite as compared to Cocoa Beach “Ron Jon District”, I would recommend one of the surfshops at the south end of Cocoa Beach. Neilson’s (just north of Patrick AFB) and OceanSports (just past Neilson on the left) are two places to check. I know Neilson rents boards, but not sure if he’s got the soft tops you are looking for. If not, I know that Cocoa Beach Surf Co. (near 520 & A1A) has them for rent, as does Ron Jon’s – at the Surfing Hall of Fame. CBSC also has lessons.
I wouldn’t recommend any of the crowded spots (ie, “Tables, 2nd light, RCs, …) but I would recommend either of the free parks (16th St. or Lori Wilson near CB Holiday Inn).
Tips: find the center of floatation of the board. Once you can float/balance, work on paddling. Catching the wave is a sprint paddle. stand up. fall down. repeat.
Have you ever been watching a surf DVD and you see some pro bust off the lip, land on some awkward angle with his body bent backwards into the white-wash and yet some how he recovers and manages to stay on his board? Don’t you wish you could do that? That sort of recovery requires an insanely high level of core strength and balance. Lucky for us, you can actually train to increase your balance and in turn improve your Surfing.....Click here to read the rest of the article:Real Surf!
