The Very Best of the Beach Boys: Sounds of Summer CD lives up to the first half of its title, though not the second.

The Beach Boys recorded tons of albums for Capitol long before The Beatles appeared on the scene and forced everyone in rock to either improve their game or get out.

Those albums are full of songs about surfing, cars and girls. They’re so simple and so heartfelt they work on a generation. I for one didn’t care much for cars. I was nowhere near the ocean so I’ve never (yet) gone surfing (but I did spend all my summers at the local swimming club, so that’s as close as I could come). But “girls” part of the equation made the songs universal.

They could have filled a CD with those old, nearly lost songs, but kept to the “best” theme. In later years, consciously competing with The Beatles (while others such as The Ventures and Jan and Dean stopped making records), their recordings became much more ambitious, though still elegant in ways that spoke to the teenage heart.

This CD contains the obvious summer songs such as Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ USA and Surfer Girl. Many of the songs could just as easily take place during the school year (Little Deuce Coupe), but speak to summer and Fun, Fun, Fun…

It’s easy to forget now, but Pet Sounds came out right after Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and stole a lot of thunder. The Beatles came out with the first “artistic breakthrough” album, and yet The Beach Boys followed right on their footsteps. (And Paul McCartney even now describes himself as England’s Number One Beach Boys fan.)

While The Beatles got into metaphysics and heavy stuff like that, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys kept their artistic ambition tuned to the concerns of average teenagers, with songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice?” “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder),” and Caroline.

Yet it’s hard to imagine anyone not being able to listen to I Get Around, Dance, Dance, Dance and Good Vibrations and not simply having fun. Yes, I realize there are people who are put off by the whole sound, because they’re think they’re either more sophisticated or down to earth or something. Their loss.

And in this day and age of celebrating girls who either look like ugly boys or like they’re trying to be international super models, it’s hard to conceive of boys glorifying the look of California Girls as they were back then… wearing bikinis, but not showing their ass cracks or butt cheeks.

Heck, when I was in high school I was anything but a school spirit advocate — yet I love to sing along with Be True to Your School. Lots of my old classmates would laugh at that.

This is not the definitive Beach Boys collection. There are a few gaps. Why was Girls on the Beach excluded but Do It Again included? Where’s Don’t Hurt My Little Sister? Then I Kissed Her? Even Surf’s Up?

Placerville is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It is one of the few places in California that actually has four distinct seasons. Forty minutes north of Sacramento, it is about as middle of the state as you can get.

No beach here. The closest snowboarding and skiing are upstate in Lake Tahoe. June to October there is jazz or blues in the plaza. The Christmas Parade brightens up December as do the stagecoach and trolley rides.

But if you hole up at a bed and breakfast, chances are you’ll hear a ghost story or two, maybe even experience an eerie sound or weird cool breeze, and you’ll be totally free to curl up with a good book, suduko, crossword or just do nothing at all.

The neighborhood streets lend themselves to meandering strolls. Tree-lined, curvy sidewalks wind around offering glances of time past, homes long lived in and gently loved.

One of the brochures you’ll find about Placerville says “Come Home to Historic Main Street”. And, that’s just what it feels like: home. Great great great grandpa’s home, back when he was young and mining for gold. Probably what brought him to California in the first place. He could have struck it rich around here, but most likely didn’t. Nevertheless, early miners took $1,000,000 from Cedar Ravine Creek nearby.

You can visit the Gold Bug Mine, formerly known as the Hattie, to see what gold mining was like: 352 feet dynamited and chipped and drilled by men not afraid to die. Opened in 1888, Hattie was a typical hard rock mine of the Mother Lode.

Here’s how the miners worked: drill a hole, set a charge of powder, then light a candle fuse and get the heck out of there. Once the rock and dust settled, maybe gold would be looking at you. Or not. So, the miners moved onward, further into the mine, ever hopeful.

Placerville’s first name was Dry Diggins. Named for an obvious reason: very little water. Frequent murders and robberies and no justice system earned the name Hangtown. A large oak tree, the hanging tree, near the center of town is even believed to have a resident ghost. Placerville became the proper name after the Placer gold deposits found in the nearby area.

Collis P. Huntington of railroad fame got his start here in a small store. There’s Combellack’s Clothing store that has been owned for a hundred years by the same family. Jane Johnson drove a herd of horses west in 1859 earning enough money, so the story goes, to build her business at 489 Main Street..

Where is the best place to learn how to surf in San Francisco?

I have never surfed before and would like to learn. Where can I take lessons? What time of year is best to learn? What beaches are good for practicing?

OK….I was born and raised in California…..The first thing I ever rode was a surfboard…….The Best!!!!!! I was surfing up until 4 years ago….slight medical problem has slowed me down a bit….but I have all intentions of getting back out there….I still have my first few boards…..a couple long boards……(:-) yep! A sweet Dewey Weber…..ah!

First of all…you surf all year long…..buy a good, a really good wet suit. Get one for summer with short sleeves. Don’t scrimp on this. Get your booties. You will wear your wet suits all the time especially in the bay area…….some great surf down the coast on PCH……..

Start slow in soupy water…low waves. They will teach you that….

I am going to give you some links for classes in the Bay Area…and I wish you the best……..There is nothing better in the world, you really get your center out there. People that don’t surf don’t understand….but it IS a religion, the only religion!……

Yes, it is normal. 9 months ago, my husband and I (who were not married or engaged at the time) moved from Virginia to Georgia. Both were born and raised in Virginia, so it was a huge movement for both. It was exciting and scary. I am very close to my family, so it was very difficult, and yes, overwhelming to say goodbye. I think that was the hardest part. When we were on the road, it is now easier. Then when we came here there was so much to do …. decompress, shares an apartment with food, had to find a new job. And we are so busy that makes the transition easier. We started to make new friends which makes also easier. Remember that you have the other and both live and feeling the same things. Is your relationship stronger. Four months after we moved here, which is devoted to four ….. months later we got married. I still miss my family, my friends and my house (VA is a beautiful state and AL is ugly), but not because I think my husband and that makes me happy. Good luck!

Cheap doesn’t mean good. If fact, most instructors don’t really teach someone how to surf, they just push their students into waves. If you can get to Huntington Beach, there are several camps and instructors around that offer group lessons in the $60 each range. If you live on the East Coast, several schools offer group lessons in that range as well, at least in the summer months. I suggest you go on the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association website and find a school or instructor that is certified.

You may also want to try Stand Up Paddle boarding which is easier to learn and you can do it even if there are no waves or very small waves..However, if there are ridable waves – you can use a stand up paddle board as a surfboard and it would be easier then a regular surfboard; if you never surfed before you can do stand up paddle in a day..Even stand up paddle surfing…

If your in Siesta Key area try Turtle Beach which is a few miles south and you can surf there..

If your In North Sarasota Try Lido Beach is also surf spot and good for beginners as well..There is a lifeguard on duty there..Surf where they can see you but surf away from swimmers/swim area…

Look for waves that have whitewater or are foamy which is what you want to surf on in the beginning…

I would stay away from surfing hot spots such as the (Venice) North Jetty or AMI until you are more advanced at surfing green water…

Just remember the best surfer on the beach is the one having the most fun…

(Tips-Advice)
Its best for a novice to surf small waves 2ft or less and avoid surfing when the wind is blowing on onshore (towards the beach)..Also surf where there are no groups of experienced surfers (Very Important) so they are not in your way and of course you in their way..Keep in mind it takes about One year to learn how to be a marginal surfer at best and to learn to surf in a group. So don’t be upset if you can’t stand up on the board and surf well in a days time…Make sure your board is waxed as well otherwise you won’t be standing up at all…

Best thing to do is wade in water between waist and chest high wait for a wave , jump up on board on your belly, paddle towards the shore then as your propelled by wave stand up (or stay in prone position) and have a blast riding it in…..But Im warning you once you stand up and ride a wave you will be hooked for life…
