You’re probably looking at this article post because you’re either: The owner of a startup clothing line; A passionate marketer for a particular streetwear or urban clothing company or you are just hungry for knowledge.

Well, consider this article your golden nugget; an absolute food for thought. I’m about to share with you my secrets on achieving success inside today’s unforgiving fashion business. Firstly, I would like to start by thanking the internet, yes, the internet which I capitalized on to garner an international presence at such an unexpected rate. It is probably the most effective and cost efficient method towards not only building brand recognition globally, but to also sky rocket your sales volume, gain more business opportunities, diversify your network, and most importantly, save more time.

Before launching my own streetwear clothing line, I heavily scrutinized like Bathing Ape, Billionaire Boys Club, Crooks and castles, Supreme, Ed Hardy etc. They are all very prominent figures planted inside today’s clothing landscape.

You know what they all have in common? A strong brand image, value, and concept behind it. These brands all created and sold a “lifestyle”. Crooks and castles sold a story and theme. Whatever it was, their product and brand image all represented a part of people’s need. This triggered an inner desire to shell out a few, or even hundreds of dollars just to pop the tags of these famous brand products.

Today, brands which are traditionally more urban focused are working to blend elements of hip hop, streetwear, skate, surf, snowbrands together. Brands with such cross over appeal consists of L-R-G, Live Mechanics, and Troop.

My recommendation here in Part I would be to encourage all owners to consider internet marketing as a vital move, while setting sights on not just diversifying your product range, but also your brand image.

What is atwater clothing company? (Skating, Surfing…?)?

I recently went to pacsun and purchased an atwater hoodie because of how plain it was. It’s hard to find a regular zip hoodie that fits that good. There are some symbols on the side similar but not exactly like the arrow ranks you see in the military (i.e. corporal, Sergeant, staff sgt..). I have looked “atwater” up online but find nothing about their clothes. Can you tell me anything about this MYSTERY company?

How Should I Pack for My First Surf Camp? – A Medium Short List of Things to Bring

What you bring and don’t bring on your surf camp trip south of the border (we’re assuming you’re not going on a surf trip to Canada, although you could do so) can literally make or break your vacation.

Wrong sunscreen? Uh-oh. I’m lobster red and can’t go outside anymore.

No extra bathing suits? That can be an irritating, chafing affair.

This medium short list is one I’ve put together for surf trips to Costa Rica so that you’ll be more prepared and enjoy your trip more while you’re there. Read it. Pack it. Enjoy!

• Money in USD (There are no ATM’s in Pavones. No one accepts credit cards or traveler’s checks)
• Airline Tickets;)
• Valid passport with at least 3 months remaining before expiring
• Crocks, Gators, Tevas, reef walkers or similar water shoes. MAKE SURE THEY’RE COMFY! You may be tromping up the river to inner tube back down.
• Closed-toed hiking/tennis shoes that can get wet (or we provide rubber boots)
• Athletic socks (soccer socks for shin guards or old school knee high tube socks) if you wish to wear our rubber boots
• Small flashlight
• Light rain jacket (May-Dec)
• Umbrella (May-Dec)
• Beach towels (at least one)
• Yoga clothes (shorts are better than pants here)
• 2 Bathing suits (at least, 3 if possible) so you always have a dry one to put on…People here live in their suits because it’s HOT. If you have more suits, bring them.
• Sunscreen (+5% zinc or titanium dioxide, over 30SPF, “waterproof”) For the body we recommend HIC 2X sunblock, Alligator, Hawaiian Blend Sport with Zinc, or La Roche-Posay Helioblock S Athelios 40 (not 60 SPF). For additional face block (for swimming/Surfing) we recommend Vertra, Shiseido Sun Protection Skin Foundation SPF 35, HIC 2X sunblock, Zinka Nosecoat, Headhunter Surf Screen, and UV Natural Sport. Old sunscreens can separate and burn your skin. We do not recommend Coppertone, Bullfrog, or most Banana Boat products. While buying sunscreens remember that SPF 70 can be the same as SPF 30 and is really a marketing scam.
• Repellent (Up to 20 or 30 % DEET should be fine–no need for the military, extra strength melt-off-your-skin stuff.) In our opinion, the best DEET-free, natural insect repellant is All Terrain Herbal Armor.
• Sun Hat
• Sun glasses
• Sarong / pareo
• Beach wear (tanks, shorts, and short skirts) Local Ticas (Costa Rican women) wear very skimpy clothes near the beaches-don’t worry about offending anyone by showing your shoulders and knees.
• Watch and/or alarm clock
• Camera (keep this out on the San Jose to Golfito flight as it is as scenic as they come)
• Any extra batteries, chargers and memory cards for the camera (no need for converters)
• Any medications necessary for known medical conditions

I researched for a couple of weeks to find the number for Quicksilver new accounts. I want to open up a surf shop here in my town and I need inventory of surfer style clothing. I found that Roxy, and Quicksilver are both the same company and I found the number to the person who is in charge of new accounts. I have emailed the new accounts division 3 times in the last 2 weeks and found 2 phone numbers to the lady who is in charge of opening new accounts for small businesses to use their products. Everytime I call it I get the same womens voicemail telling me to leave a detailed message. I get no response from them from either the email or phone. Does anyone know what I should do?? What to wear during a first time surf lesson?

I’m going to Hawaii in 1 week and want to take a surf lesson. I’ve never surfed in my life! Just wondering, should I buy some surf clothes to wear BEFORE i go to hawaii, or do they provide attire during these lesson? (of course I have a bathing suit, but I’m assuming I need one of those surf shifts or board shorts?)

You could wear different things while surfing. Since it is your first time and you will be taking lessons then the instructor may provided you with a wet suit. If he does not I would recommend wear board shorts/bikini bottom (normal bating suit trunks/bikini bottom should be fine on your first time surfing). But I do recommend getting a rash guard because when you are learning the Pop-up in surfing you can get a rash from rubbing your upper body along the board in attempts to stand up (you can buy a rash guard almost at any surf shop or beach supplier store). If it is only your first time surfing don’t go and invest in a wet suit of your own right away wait till after your lesson to see how much you enjoy surfing ( they can be expensive) all so take into account how often you will be going surfing (there is no need to buy an expensive wet suit if you will not be surfing too often).

Surf Clothing Advice for Female Athletes

Women may be a little more self-conscious when trying on surf clothing, especially tight wetsuits. Wetsuits can either flatter an athletic body or emphasize flaws that become more apparent as the suit skims the body. Some female surfers may not really care but others are more interested in actually not just executing their program well but also in looking great doing so. There are ways in which women can avoid looking terrible in a wetsuit. Here are some tips:

Wear well fitting suits.

Wetsuits should fit the body just right. The fit must be snug, but not so tight that it constricts the blood flow. Tight suits may even result to rashes. They may not allow you to move as freely as you want. The fit must never be loose or water can get inside the suit. This will be very uncomfortable. You will get very cold fast and may not perform as well as you can. Remember that you are wearing your wetsuit for another reason: insulation.

Choose no rash outfits during the summer.

During the summer, you will naturally be more exposed to heat. You may then develop rashes. To help prevent this condition, you can wear no rash wetsuits. No rash wetsuits have the additional benefit of UV protection. Rash guards are basically stretchy-type lycra shirts.

Pick a design that reflects personality.

Yeah, you can pick a brand and design that reflects your personality. There is no need to look just like everyone else, unless it is specified that you have to wear a certain design. There are pure black wetsuits while there are also colorful ones. You could find a wetsuit with streaks of your favorite color. If you like girly colors then go for those. Do not mind people who may think that you are not a serious surfer just because you want some colors with your black suit. Surf clothing is now more varied in design.

Consider your body type.

To look your best, you need surf clothing that suits your body type. If you are top-heavy, you should be ok with dark colored upper designs. If you are bottom-heavy, you can wear a wetsuit that is darker on the bottom. It may not be a good idea to wear a bikini bottom in this case.

Surf wear should primarily be comfortable. If, however, all Surfing Clothes can be made to be comfortable then the next step will be to create a variety of designs and fits. This way, every surfer can be happy.

How to Refashion a Men’s Shirt

If you surf the web looking for new and exciting craft ideas, you have likely come across a collection of tutorials on how to refashion a men’s shirt. Oversize men’s shirts especially provide a great deal of fabric for new projects. You can learn how to refashion a men’s shirt from your man’s closet or pick up some used shirts from your local thrifty store. To spark your creativity, here is a collection of ideas on how to refashion a men’s shirt.

1. Quilt- A men’s shirt quilt is my favorite idea for how to refashion a men’s shirt. This refashion project is perfect for a Father’s Day gift or a quilted decoration that your man will love too. You will need between 7-12 men’s shirts for this project, depending on the size of the shirts and the size of your desired quilt. If you don’t have that many in the home, pick up a few more at your local thrift store. Pick a collection of different check and stripe shirts for an interesting look. 2. Collars and Capes- Turn a men’s dress shirt into a cute little collar or a warm cape for the cooler months.  The collar of a men’s shirt can become a really fun embellished necklace. You can also use the collar and/or cuffs of a men’s shirt to add contrast to a woman’s shirt.
3. Ruffles- You can use a men’s shirt to add ruffles to a plain dress or a dress refashioned from another men’s shirt.
4. Apron- An oversize men’s shirt can easily become an apron when the edges start to wear. Use another shirt to create an apron with contrast edging.
5. Cuffs- If you have minimal sewing expertise, you can likely still make something with the cuffs off a men’s shirt. Turn them into fashionable cuff bracelets, coffee jackets
6. Pajamas- Use the comfortable fabric of worn-in men’s shirts to create comfortable pajamas. Make a fitted camisole and shorts set or a sleep sack for a young girl.
7. Fitted Shirt for Woman- You can find many free sewing tutorials to refashion a men’s shirt into a fitted shirt for a woman. You can make a ruffle tube top, a peasant blouse or a fitted short-sleeve shirt.
8. Dress- An oversize men’s shirt can be refashioned into a cute dress with colorful binding. You can cut-off the sleeves and use for flower embellishments on your girly dress. A smaller men’s shirt can be refashioned into a toddler dress too.
9. Skirt- Turn the button down front of a men’s shirt into a bubble skirt or a fashionable pencil skirt.
10. Shorts and Pants- Make striped shorts for a 4T toddler with one XL men’s dress shirt. Elastic at the waist is an essential addition for kids’ clothing. For a little one, use the sleeves of a large shirt to create a pair of pants, with cuffs at the ankles!

The History Of Surf Clothing

Back in the post war fifties, surfers were known as “beach bums”. Then, seemingly in the blink of an eye, everybody wanted to be a surfer. Everybody wanted to be a part of it and those baggy trunks that surfers wore became the first surf clothing fad. How did surfers go from being virtual outcasts to the creators of a fashion craze that has lasted to this day?

Most people attribute surfing’s meteoric rise to the Beach Boys. However, they were relative late-comers. It was a film made about a Malibu teenager that first brought surfing into the limelight. The movie, “Gidget”, was based on a true story that was published as a book in 1957 and released in 1959 as a movie.

Starring superstars Sandra Dee, James Darren and Cliff Robertson, the movie featured handsome young athletes, bikini-clad girls, lots of action and a hit soundtrack. It was all about the Malibu surfing community and made surfing look like what most surfers would agree it really is – the ultimate lifestyle.

The popularity of that movie led to many more imitators. In pop music, surf music became huge, with groups like Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys making in to Number One on the charts. About the only teenagers who didn’t like their music were surfers, who really preferred to keep their sport to themselves. Instead, they listened to the music of bands like Dick Dale and the Ventures. The fast-paced guitar licks in instrumentals like “Perfidia” and “Walk, Don’t Run” were what they listened to before they tackled the waves.

There was nothing that surfers could do to stop the rise of surfing. By the sixties, surfing was on the map and everybody wanted to be a surfer. Those who lived near the beach started surfing, while those who didn’t started dressing like surfers.

In those early years, men’s surf trunks and girl’s bikinis were the only “official” surfwear accessories. Over the years, entire ranges of surfing gear were designed and marketed by surfwear companies, a few of which have become giants in the sports apparel industry.

Surfwear is not just for surfers anymore. You can find it in the most far-flung corners of the world. From the limited apparel of the sixties, the range of surfing related clothing and accessories has grown to include all kinds of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and even watches and jewelry. Today, you can be dressed for any occasion in surfing brands and styles.

Surfing and surf clothing have entered the mainstream and are no longer on the fringes. The best surfers in the world make millions of dollars and the big surfwear companies compete for their sponsorship dollars. You can’t help but wonder what Gidget thinks about all the changes.
