My daughter is turning 18 and I have no idea what to get her?
Her mom died when she was tree so it is just the two of us. And I stink at buying gifts. I already through her a huge birthday party every year. And for her 16th I got her a brand new Mercedes ( it was red just the one she wanted). When she turned 17 I sent her and a friend on a two week trip to Europe. I have no idea what to get her. I usually hire someone to buy her gifts (like I said I really stink at this) but this year I want it to be a little more personal.

Torn ACL a week ago. However, in tons of pain!?

I completely tore my ACL and tore part of my thigh and I strained lateral collateral nearly two weeks to go skiing. Now I can walk on my leg and unlocked without a crutch, but I'm still in so much pain. According to my doctor that I must undergo surgery for sports and live a normal active life. It hurts more to bend the knee. It was transferred to the party last night and, oh man! I made my eyes water! It was so bad! I work every day my knee. Can I use my bike elliptical machine and stationary all my day. So it's not like I'm sitting doing nothing. I also have a son 1 1 / 2 years to run after all day. What a pity that my really bad? Am I doing too much too soon? Thank you for your thoughts!

You may also want to try Stand Up Paddle boarding which is easier to learn and you can do it even if there are no waves or very small waves..However, if there are ridable waves – you can use a stand up paddle board as a surfboard and it would be easier then a regular surfboard; if you never surfed before you can do stand up paddle in a day..Even stand up paddle surfing…

If your in Siesta Key area try Turtle Beach which is a few miles south and you can surf there..

If your In North Sarasota Try Lido Beach is also surf spot and good for beginners as well..There is a lifeguard on duty there..Surf where they can see you but surf away from swimmers/swim area…

Look for waves that have whitewater or are foamy which is what you want to surf on in the beginning…

I would stay away from surfing hot spots such as the (Venice) North Jetty or AMI until you are more advanced at surfing green water…

Just remember the best surfer on the beach is the one having the most fun…

Its best for a novice to surf small waves 2ft or less and avoid surfing when the wind is blowing on onshore (towards the beach)..Also surf where there are no groups of experienced surfers (Very Important) so they are not in your way and of course you in their way..Keep in mind it takes about One year to learn how to be a marginal surfer at best and to learn to surf in a group. So don’t be upset if you can’t stand up on the board and surf well in a days time…Make sure your board is waxed as well otherwise you won’t be standing up at all…

Does anybody know a local(florida) surfer giving surf lessons?

I know there is ton’s of places to get lessons here in Florida but they are all commercial businesses, I don’t want to take commercialized surf lessons. I would prefer being taught how to surf by someone that just lives for the waves. Someone that lives on the beach, doesn’t own a shirt, or shoes, just a board and board shorts because that’s all he/she needs. You have the exact right idea, lessons are the best way to start to surf. (Read any of my old answers). But I think you are in the wrong forum to find what you are looking for.

Forget about looking on the internet (or getting lucky enough to find a competent young surfer on this site). Stop in local surf shops, and ask the folks who work there. Yes, at first they will refer you to the “established” instructors. But there are also lots of surfers who are very competent and talented instructors who give lessons as a “side job”. Surfing people ‘network’ and you will find stuff faster in the surfing world rather than the general population
