Five Terrific Values When Traveling to Oahu

The Hawaiian Islands are recognized for their natural splendor, wonderful climate, and friendly people.  It is also known as a really expensive place to reach and exist in.  But in this article I will illustrate five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, and these are not mindless things to do like lying around the seaside (which you can do anyplace there is a beach and nice climate), but activities that you can do only on Oahu.

1.    The first of the terrific values when traveling to Oahu will be the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.  This is at no cost, and free tickets for the program are offered on a first come, first- served basis.  It is really a serious and sobering experience, as you are actually standing over a grave site where 1177 men lost their lives.  The addition in 1999 of the Battleship Missouri, the vessel where the formal signing of the “Instrument of Surrender” on September 2, 1945 ended the Second World War, is really a fitting bookend to the US involvement in the conflict.  Over a million and one half visitors each year tour the site, so it is strongly recommended you get there early to beat the excursion buses.

2.    A drive to Oahu’s North Shore, known as the surfing capital of the world, will simply amount to the cost of a rental car.  All of the beaches in Hawaii are open, so it is possible for you to visit the home to the very best world-class surfers inhabit.  Make sure to stop at the Banzai Pipeline, where surfers make their way through the center of the wave.  This is an easy hour’s drive from Waikiki, and an area that far too many tourists neglect to see.

3.    Another cheap opportunity is a trek up to the top of Diamond Head.  Positioned at the Southeast coast of Oahu and overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki Beach, this $5 per car ($1 for pedestrians) experience may be done in two hours, and is approximately 1.4 miles in length.  The path is cemented most of the way, and as I remember the top got quite steep.  But the top presents a spectacular 365 degree view of Oahu and is a must-see for photography enthusiasts.

4.    The Dole Plantation is a renovated, operational pineapple plantation that is devoted to the perpetuation of the Hawaiian agricultural heritage.  This costs $8 for adults, $6 for children, and the tour takes guests from the point in time the Dole enterprise was a two-horse ranch to the most important producer and marketer of pineapples in the world.  It also features a two acre, 1.7 miles of paths maze, recognized inside the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest maze around the world.

5.    The last among the five terrific values when traveling to Oahu would be to top off the day with a two hour Waikiki evening dinner cruise.  There are several to choose from, but can be purchased for as little as $125 per person.  These let you get beautiful views of Waikiki and Diamond Head, along with a one hour picturesque ride up Mount Tantalus to view Honolulu by nighttime for a $22 ad on.

Now that you have five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, you should have an affordable solution to get around.  The Bus will allow you to travel to all or any the favorite buying and beach areas, and they are available frequently.  It is a good service for tourists who do not have autos to get about – it makes getting to places outside the immediate Waikiki district rather accessible.  So enjoy your trip in Hawaii, and know that you won’t have to spend a fortune.

I recently went to pacsun and purchased an atwater hoodie because of how plain it was. It’s hard to find a regular zip hoodie that fits that good. There are some symbols on the side similar but not exactly like the arrow ranks you see in the military (i.e. corporal, Sergeant, staff sgt..). How Should I Pack for My First Surf Camp? – A Medium Short List of Things to Bring

What you bring and don’t bring on your surf camp trip south of the border (we’re assuming you’re not going on a surf trip to Canada, although you could do so) can literally make or break your vacation.

Wrong sunscreen? Uh-oh. I’m lobster red and can’t go outside anymore.

No extra bathing suits? That can be an irritating, chafing affair.

This medium short list is one I’ve put together for surf trips to Costa Rica so that you’ll be more prepared and enjoy your trip more while you’re there. Read it. Pack it. Enjoy!

• Money in USD (There are no ATM’s in Pavones. No one accepts credit cards or traveler’s checks)
• Airline Tickets;)
• Valid passport with at least 3 months remaining before expiring
• Crocks, Gators, Tevas, reef walkers or similar water shoes. MAKE SURE THEY’RE COMFY! You may be tromping up the river to inner tube back down.
• Closed-toed hiking/tennis shoes that can get wet (or we provide rubber boots)
• Athletic socks (soccer socks for shin guards or old school knee high tube socks) if you wish to wear our rubber boots
• Small flashlight
• Light rain jacket (May-Dec)
• Umbrella (May-Dec)
• Beach towels (at least one)
• Yoga clothes (shorts are better than pants here)
• 2 Bathing suits (at least, 3 if possible) so you always have a dry one to put on…People here live in their suits because it’s HOT. If you have more suits, bring them.
• Sunscreen (+5% zinc or titanium dioxide, over 30SPF, “waterproof”) For the body we recommend HIC 2X sunblock, Alligator, Hawaiian Blend Sport with Zinc, or La Roche-Posay Helioblock S Athelios 40 (not 60 SPF). For additional face block (for swimming/Surfing) we recommend Vertra, Shiseido Sun Protection Skin Foundation SPF 35, HIC 2X sunblock, Zinka Nosecoat, Headhunter Surf Screen, and UV Natural Sport. Old sunscreens can separate and burn your skin. We do not recommend Coppertone, Bullfrog, or most Banana Boat products. While buying sunscreens remember that SPF 70 can be the same as SPF 30 and is really a marketing scam.
• Repellent (Up to 20 or 30 % DEET should be fine–no need for the military, extra strength melt-off-your-skin stuff.) In our opinion, the best DEET-free, natural insect repellant is All Terrain Herbal Armor.
• Sun Hat
• Sun glasses
• Sarong / pareo
• Beach wear (tanks, shorts, and short skirts) Local Ticas (Costa Rican women) wear very skimpy clothes near the beaches-don’t worry about offending anyone by showing your shoulders and knees.
• Watch and/or alarm clock
• Camera (keep this out on the San Jose to Golfito flight as it is as scenic as they come)
• Any extra batteries, chargers and memory cards for the camera (no need for converters)
• Any medications necessary for known medical conditions

A Little In The Early History Of Surfing

Surfing does, has done, and continues to, have a grip on the world. Those who start it rarely quit. Where did this unusual sport originate? What challenges did it face to become the sport it is? Read on for a little of the history behind surfing.

First records of surfing.

Lieutenant King who went along with the more famous Captain Cook on his voyage of exploration, recorded the natives of Hawaii doing ‘he’e nalu’ (Hawaiian for surfing, meaning literally, wave sliding) in 1779 A.D. This was the first time the sport had ever been recorded in writing by a westerner. He’s recorded as saying  in Captain Cooks  journal (King finished off Cooks journal after he as killed);

“”The Men sometimes 20 or 30 go without the swell of the surf, and lay themselves flat upon an oval piece of plan about their size and breadth, they keep their legs close on top of it, and  their arms are used to guide the plank, they wait at the time of the greatest swell that sets on shore, and altogether push forward with their arms to keep on its top, it sends them in with a most astonishing Velocity”

Although Lieutenant King, ‘discovered’ surfing for the western world around 330 years ago, scientists have other evidence from western Polynesia such as cave drawings and tribal stories, that suggest surfing, in one form or another, has been ongoing for around 3000 years!

Importance of surfing to the natives

Hawaiians loved to surf. Their chiefs, showed their prowess by showing off their surfing skills. Surfboards were prized items. Practically everybody on the island, knew how to surf.

While he recorded the feats of the people on Hawaii, Lieutenant King didn’t fully understand the significance of surfing to the natives. It was an integral part of their caste based system of ruling. Tribe leaders had their own private beaches to use to enjoy the waves. Lower level people were generally forbidden to use these beaches. An exception might be granted if they were seen to exhibit particular skill in the sport. If, a commoner was, allowed to use the leaders beach it was considered a great honour.

Legendary stories recorded in songs and chants, abound from both commoner and king, of lives risked and of heroic actions all while in the surf. However in the wake of Captain Cooks voyage, things were to change.

Surfing gets forced out

After Cooks voyage, the Hawaiian islands became the place of choice for all seafarers, captains, adventurers and the like to visit. This influx of people and cultures changed Hawaiian life quickly. For example within 50 years of Cooks visit, Liholiho, the son and successor of Kamehameha I (Chief of the island at the time), swayed by the culture of the Europeans, sat down with his mother and other high chiefesses to eat dinner as equals. Since anybody could remember, men eating with woman was strictly ‘not done’.

This single act signalled the end for the system of laws, Kapu, that the islanders had followed since the beginning of time.

With Kapu done, all the cultural and ritual ties that were associated with that and surfing went. Commoners and heiresses could mix without the commoners worrying that they might come to an un-timely death. Beaches were no longer segregated to different social classes. All traditional life had went the way of the dodo and the islanders lives, with no set structure, went into chaos. Enter the Christian missionaries.

In 1820 the missionaries arrived and began converting the islanders from Polytheism to Christianity. Within ten years the islanders were all about the strict moral codes associated with the way of the cloth, rather than their normal, laid back, island life.

Once converted the missionaries had the islanders focusing more on reading, writing, working and wearing clothes than playing or surfing. In fact surfing was actively discouraged as it was seen to be against Gods rules. The future did not look good.

The only thing going out faster than surfing was the Hawaiians themselves. The ‘foreigners’ had brought disease with them that the islanders had no immunity from. From a spritely population of around 800,000 when Cook arrived in 1779 it dwindled to around 40,000 by 1896, a loss of 95% in only 117 years.

The revival

Despite all the missionaries efforts to the contrary, surfing was never totally dismissed from the island. At the turn of the 20th century, a few die hards remained surfing at Kalehuawehe on the south shore of Oahu. There are photos of solitary surfers on the beach from this time where once in the past there had been hundreds.

The revival of surfing from the brink of extinction was brought about strangely enough from the same race of people that sought to rid the island of it in the first place.

Jack London who was a popular writer of the time visited the island and was introduced to Alexander Ford. Ford, in turn, introduced him to celebrated beach boy George Freeth and from them, London was introduced to surfing.

So impressed was London, that he wrote a book, A Royal Sport: Surfing in Waikiki. Needless to say this book did well. So well in fact that one of it’s stars George Freeth was invited to show Californians, how to surf. That too was another success for surfing.

Over the next few years these champions of the sport would breathe the necessary life, back into it. London wrote about it and Freeth showcased it to the world. Ford went about campaigning for the sport, founding the ‘Outrigger canoe club’ on Waikiki beach, which focused much on promoting the sport overseas. The fourth saviour was the final thing needed to bring it permanently to the world stage.

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku

Duke, was a native Hawaiian and a lover of surfing and all things water. Blessed with huge hands and feet, Duke took part in the 1912 and 1916 Olympics, winning Gold in the 100 meter freestyle each time. He was generally considered the fastest man in water.

In 1915 he was invited to Australia to perform in New South Wales. Pretty soon after this visit, the whole country fell in love with the sport, putting Oz on track to be a surfing Mecca.

The world knew about surfing largely from the efforts of London, Freeth and Ford. Now that such a popular figure was doing it, everybody wanted to try it.

Conclusion

Surfing was enjoyed by a few for thousands of years. Under influential pressure from Europe and the missionaries, it was nearly lost for good, but never quite vanished. Thanks largely to the efforts of four men, it would return to the world and reach unimaginable heights.

Jack Johnson Tickets – Jack Johnson Tailors Sixth Album, ‘To the Sea,’ to Fans

Jack Johnson released his sixth album, To the Sea, on Tuesday, June 1 and the characteristically mellow musician chatted about his expectations for the record with MTV News. Johnson told MTV News that he won’t even know about the response for To the Sea because he is going off the grid on a camping trip!

“Generally, I’ve been out and about when the records come out … [but] we’re about to leave for two weeks on a little camping trip, [and] that works better for me, a little bit. Get away from it and not think about it too much … Whenever friends’ albums come out, I go out and buy them. But when it’s my own, I don’t want to jinx it,” Johnson revealed.

Back in April, Johnson’s To the Sea scored the No. 1 spot on the iTunes albums chart based only on pre-orders so it is safe to say he can’t jinx the success of his sixth album! As opposed to album sales, Johnson is more concerned with relating to his many fans.

“I guess, with all the albums, I never used to think about it, but now there’s different songs that people will tell me, you know, ‘This song really means a lot to me after I lost a close friend,’ or, ‘This song is what we danced to a at our wedding’,” said Johnson before adding, “So I hope there’s songs on this—as I went through certain things in my life, whether they were heavy or just something fun, and wrote a song about it—hopefully, people can take those songs and they mean something and they can use it in their life.”

Although fans of the folk rocker were ready for him to release the follow-up to 2008’s platinum-selling Sleep Through the Static, Johnson didn’t anticipate releasing an album so soon. USA Today reports that Johnson planned on taking a hiatus from writing and recording in the wake of his father’s death last August after battling cancer. Johnson pays tribute to his late father on To the Sea, while the album also includes four love songs for his wife Kim and one aptly-titled track—”My Little Girl”—which was inspired by the couple’s third child. The idea was of a father leading a son to the sea the way my father did. Until this album, I stayed away from any kind of oceanic references after being labeled this beach-boy surfer guy.”

After suffering from an accident at the famed Oahu’s Pipeline Masters when he was 17, Johnson earned a film degree from the University of California-Santa Barbara. He began to focus on a career in music after releasing the 2000 surf documentary Thicker Than Water with friends and professional surfers Emmett and Chris Malloy. Fellow laid-back musician G. Love took Johnson under his wing and the rest is, as they say, history.

Redesigning Your Child’s Bedroom Using Surf Decor

If your kid is sick of his or her room looking like everyone else’s with the same old cartoon characters or superheroes, then it is time for a whole new look. Add some fun to their life by turning their room into something their friends will envy with beach and surfboard home decor.

You will of course need a surfboard or two; you can’t have a surfing theme without one. You can find used ones that are cheap at local surf shops or flea markets. Make a shelf on the wall with one with a few brackets or turn an old desk into something fun by replacing the top with a surfboard. If your child is a surfer, hang their board on the wall for when they are not using it and in the off season it decorates the room.

Think about the walls of the room, if you are good with a paint brush you can create a wave crashing effect. Paint the walls a nice blue and then using a brush and white paint, take big sweeping strokes to create a wave effect, they could even overlap onto the ceiling. If you are not handy with a brush, rag painting is something that can create a similar affect. Offset the wells with light airy white curtains with straight lines, nothing frilly or too fancy.

Beach towels are not only the perfect addition to hang on the wall or drape somewhere, but you can use one to upholster a chair in the room. No beach theme is complete without at least one beach towel in the mix.

For a great old school Surfing Decor vibe, look for some signs to hang on the walls, maybe even the door. Online or in the local surf shops you’ll be able to find a lot of vintage beach signs if your child prefers those to the newer styles today. If your kid loves posters, a poster or two of a surfing scene or the beach will dress up the walls too.

Add a bit of fun with novelty items. You can find a variety of different surf and beach related items that would match the room perfectly. A surfboard print light switch plate, a surfboard shaped wall clock and a few surfboard wall hooks for their coats and hats are just a few of the very cool things out there to choose from.

And nothing pulls a room completely together like the right bedding. Today, bedding is all about design and you’ll find a variety of different choices when it comes to surfing and the beach. There will be flashy colorful ocean scenes to subtle and calming beach scenes to choose from.

What size longboard should i get? (skateboard NOT surf board)?

I’m 12 and i really want to learn how to longboard. I wear size 8 sneakers if that’s important. I think i can teach my self how to longboard but i don’t know what size i can get.

Size depends on your preference, not your age or height or anything else.

Some really tall (6′3″) guys like shorter boards (36″), and some shorter guys like really long boards (55″).

I’d suggest getting something in the 38-42″ range for your first board.

You should look at Kracked Skulls. The M1 is a great beginner board, and is very cheap. You can get a complete board for ~$150, so you’re only paying about $45 for the deck.

Their flex tends to lose their liveliness after about 6 months to a year, depending on how hard you ride it, but by then you’ll definitely want a new board anyways, so you can just pick up a new M1 or get an altogether new deck and put your trucks and wheels on it.
