The Perfect Tan …dying for It?

                                                THE PERFECT TAN …

                                                      Dying for it?

            Who doesn’t want to look healthy, sexy, thin?  Yes, even thin.  At least that’s what we were told some five decades ago.  We even poured on baby oil to make us tan  faster.  But dying for the perfect tan was never in the bargain because we didn’t know that could happen.

            Today most of us know there’s danger lurking out there.  And what do we do about it?  We go to sun tanning salons and roast under sun lamps (which, by the way, are far worse than a day at the beach).  We also go to the beach.  Oh yes, we use our sunblock…maybe.  We might go in the water, but do we reapply sunscreen afterward?  Most likely, no.

            And, at the same time, interestingly enough, we get our faces lasered, lifted, polished, oxygenized and more which makes us even more sensitive to the damaging rays of the sun, but does that knowledge stop us from excessive sun exposure?  Some of us, yes.

            But there are so many of us not paying heed.  Why?

            There are probably as many different reasons as there are people, but incomplete knowledge about how to really protect yourself is a major one. 

            What came to mind while writing this was my attempts to be a skier decades ago at Sun Valley, Idaho.  I was doing some exploring of the west on a Greyhound bus, and thought how fun it would be to get a job in this resort town for the winter.  I wasn’t thinking about skiing;  I was thinking about meeting some terrific men who came there to ski.

            It was nearing the fall and all the jobs I could think of were taken.  The Greyhound bus would be stopping any minute and I’d get on it and return to Los Angeles. 

            Within five minutes, I did find work . . . right next door to the coffee shop I was waiting in.  I worked at night singing and playing the piano (after 3 weeks of piano lessons) in the bar right next door.  I had the day to myself … every single day.

            After 3 or 4 days, I was going nuts having all this time on my hands and all of a sudden it occurred to me that if I was going to stay here, I should take lessons and learn how to ski!  The only problem was that I was not at all athletic, and I was terrified of skiing after the one experience I had had at a local mountain resort skiing over the edge of a hill.  I was in a class, but somehow hadn’t gotten the concept of how to stop myself.

            Well, I decided to take lessons, anyway.  And each time before I went up the mountain, I made a bargain with God (and I was not religious).  If you get me down the hill this one time, I will never ski again.  Well, this sounds pretty stupid, but I did it nonetheless.  And somehow each time I went up I made it back down again. 

            That’s what I think happens with skin cancer.   What’s a few hours in the sun?   It feels so good and I’m young.  If and when I ever get it, they’ll probably have developed a cure.  I’m so young and it’s mostly old people who get it.  Who cares what happens to me then?   A bargain, a rationale, whatever you want to call it.

            Protecting yourself is so easy.   Use a good sunscreen (one that protects against A and B rays) and reapply it often, wear a UV hat, protective clothing, and stay out of the sun in peak hours.  And the money you would use in a tanning salon … which will do a lot more damage than a day at the beach…save it for a vacation or something that will enrich your life, not something that could shorten it.

Taupo

Taupo, a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island, is within the southern Waikato area and has a population of 23,000. Taupo is located at the outlet of Lake Taupo which is New Zealand’s largest lake, forming the Waikato river. The river then flows over one of New Zealand’s most stunning waterfalls, the Huka Falls, which can be viewed just north of the town.

Taupo is also a centre of volcanic and geothermal activity. With all packages you have unlimited use of the Thalassotherapy pool. Costa Cruises offers the largest spa at sea on their Concordia. In the 20,000+ square foot spa there are Turkish baths, Rock saunas and thermals. If you book a suite on the Concordia, or a spa cabin, you have unlimited access to the Ristorante Samsaru where Chef Ettore Bocchia, another Michelin starred professional, has created the menu. All of the major cruise lines have choices which include aerobics, work out rooms with equipment, saunas, whirlpools and special programs like yoga or toning and stretching.

Because of our hectic world some people just don’t want to be without internet access. Well, the cruise industry has answered your concerns. It is safe to say that all of the mega liners have internet access. Some have portals in each berth while others have internet cafes. On the higher end cruise lines you can borrow lap tops to use in your cabin. Each cruise line is different, some charge for usage or some use it as a perk for repeat cruisers. For instance, Princess Cruises has free internet usage for their Captains Club members after they have sailed a certain amount of times on the Princess ships. The cruise lines clubs (once you have sailed on a particular cruise line you are automatically a club member) all have different “perks” for different levels of repeat cruisers but that is for another discussion.

As you can see, the cruise lines are keeping up with all cruisers demands so you have lots of options to choose from on your next cruise vacation. Check out all the cruise lines with your Travel Agent and pick the one that is tailor made for your needs.

General Sherman slept here!!

At least that is the legend around Norris Lake, just outside of Atlanta. Rumor has it that General William Tecumseh Sherman and his forces camped in the river basin that is now known as Norris Lake for a period after sucessfully destroying Atlanta and the extensive railroad system. It is highly likely to be true because the Lake is mostly surrounded by high hills and would have offered great protection and looking at a map of Sherman’s route, Norris Lake would have been right on his way from Decatur to Covingtonm and on to Savannah.

But regardless of what happened 145 years ago, we do know that in 1936 the No Business Creek, which feeds the Yellow River was dammed up to create Norris Lake, for the purpose of building a fishing camp for the harried city slickers in Atlanta. Tiny summer cottages and little concrete block boat houses were erected on the waterfront.

If fishing then was half as good as it is today, the developer had to make a ton of dough. Today, it is not unusual to tie-in to a 9 or 10 pound large mouth bass and certainly common place to take home a stringer of Brim and Cats in an hour or so. Recently the lake was stocked with stripped bass, a very popular sport fish that you are asked to release back into the wild.

Fish are just a small part of the wildlife population that helps you get away from the city. A bird sanctuary peninsula is home to about every bird native to Georgia, Canadian geese, Peking and Moscovi ducks and of course white tail deer. A family of beaver calls the No Business Creek home and Florida Soft Shelled turtles are quite common along with the usual painted turtles, snappers and Box turtles. Owls of all varieties, hawks, heron and egrets are everywhere.

Water sports abound at Norris Lake. It is the only lake in the area where you are actually allowed to “play” on the water. There are no horsepower limits on the lake so you can actually water ski, wake board, sail, swim or jet ski on the lake. With 96 acres of private water, there is room for everybody since only resident members and their guests are allowed boat access. On any typical summer weekend you seldom see more than 3-4 boats on the water at a time and usually they are slow poking pontoon party boats anchored in a raft near the center of the lake while folks young and old drift in the cool lake waters. There might be a wake boarder showing off his latest jump or fancy flip or some 8 year old just getting up for the first time on his own wake board. Jet skiiers and wave runners are welcome but very scarce for some reason.

Most of the old original fishing cabins have been dozed and new, spacious water front homes have been built in their stead. There is nothing comparable to leaving the traffic on I-285, going home to your waterfront home, uncorking a cold one and dropping a hook off your own dock and grabbing fresh bass for dinner. And the amazing part is that this hidden lake has not yet been discovered by Atlanta so you can still buy a waterfront home for under $150,000.

Situated just off SR 124 about half way between Snellville and Stonecrest Mall on I-20, you would never know the lake existed if you didn’t have a map. Just about 8 minutes to the new Wal-Mart Super Center at Centerville and the Publix, Norris Lake is only 15 minutes from Stonecrest Mall and downtown Snellville and Conyers. Except at early morning drive time, it is only about half an hour to Buckhead. Country living doesn’t get any better than Norris Lake.

Most of Norris Lake is in Gwinnett County, so most of the children are part of the award winning Gwinnett School System. A brand new elementary school is presently being built on SR124 right at Norris Lake Road and is supposed to open next year.

Does anyone know the best places to live in the country for outdoor activities and recreation?

They are always in the mountains where you can fish for trout, kayak, canoe, white water rafting, theme parks, water parks, camping, snow skiing, horse back riding, hiking, water skiing and atv riding. There might be some argument for living in Florida, but who wants the heat. The problem is people live in areas where there’s nothing to do for recreation. People that live near National Forests have so much they can do. If you live near the cities you can only go to a movie, restaurant or go bowling. Big deal. Move to where there is recreation and you’ll never be sorry. To hell with living near your relatives. I have many relatives, but they never have any get togethers and they never invite you over, so what the hell is the use living near them. Frig the relatives and move to where you can have fun. Riding around, going to bars and drinking beer is the life of a loser.

The best place is where YOU find the things YOU enjoy.

I live in the country, but while in the Marines there were times I had no choice but to live in the city. Everyplace has outdoor recreation available, EVEN THE CITIES. If you can’t find them, you’re sitting on your back end. Call the city or county parks department. Check out the state park system. Join an outdoors adventure club. Talk to people at sporting goods stores. I live an hour from Houston, but know of places in that city of 2 million people where you can’t even see any buildings, yet are within 5 miles of the downtown skyscrapers!

1) Big Cottonwood Canyon

To be more specific, I would recommend Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood. I also wouldn’t limit your mountain experience to just Big Cottonwood. Little Cottonwood and Immigration Canyons are also great for hiking. Millcreek Canyon is gorgeous, too.

Other things I would suggest are the aforementioned Kennecott Copper Mine, Hogle Zoo, Red Butte Gardens, Thanksgiving Point [shops and gardens], Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and Bridal Veil Falls. The Alpine Loop connects American Fork and Provo canyon and has gorgeous views along the way.

One of the best kept secrets in the Atlanta Area is a cozy private lake located at the corner of Gwinnett, DeKalb and Rockdale Counties. This lovely, tree lined lake covers 96 acres and is suitable for just about all water sports for young and old and is home for some fabulous houses for less than $200K. Your kids will find healthy enjoyment Water Skiing and wake boarding and of course swimming and diving. The BASS fishing is absolutely fabulous, witnessed by the huge turnout at the twice annual fishing tournament held by the Neighborhood activities committee. Large mouth bass of 10 pounds and more are not uncommon and of course there is an abundance of brim and catfish.

This summertime mecca is located just 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta and offers a wonderful, rural ambience that sort of reminds me of Maybury RFD, not Atlanta, Georgia. Norris Lake was originally created as a 30 acre pond in 1936 and was intended to be a fishing camp with a few small cottages for weekend retreats. Over time more land was flooded and plans evolved to make the area a golf course community.

Fortunately, that never happened but most of the small seasonal homes have been replaced by new year round, houses and new waterfront homes continue to be built even today. But even with all of the newer homes, Norris Lake still feels like a page of history. Many residents still own and operate vintage power boats from the 1970’s, including Master Craft and Correct Craft, inboard, ski boats. Dotting the shore line are a number of little boat houses built in the 1950’s and 60’s that are barely big enough for a boat. Yet, right next door you are likely to find a new $80,000 wake board boat, jet ski or pontoon party boat.

Norris Lake is privately owned and access is granted only to resident members and their guests. Thus, on any given summer weekend, you will seldom experience more than a half dozen power boats on the water at a time so you never have the confusion and traffic of Lake Lanier. And speaking of Lanier, even during the peak of the drought when Lanier was virtually un-accessible, Norris was filled to capacity and overflowing the spillway.

Waterfront homes generally are priced between $150,000 and $350,000.
