Acapulco’s Beaches – Something for Everybody

Acapulco has some of the best beaches in Mexico, if not in the world. From Pie de la Cuesta to the bay itself, then out to Puerto Marques and Diamante, and on as far as Barra Vieja, Acapulco offers miles and miles of beaches, each with a personality of its own.

The Pacific Ocean beaches can have strong waves, and are fun for those who like hearty water sports. Surfers particularly like Bonfil and Tres Vidas — beaches east of Revolcadero in the Diamond Zone. Inside the bay the waves are usually gentle, particularly in the “traditional zone,” which is like a cove within a cove. The “Golden Zone” on the east side of Acapulco’s bay, from Parque Papagayo to the Naval Base, has marvelous water, sand, crowds and restaurants. In the middle of this is Condesa Beach, party central during Spring Break.

Here is a rapid tour of the highlights:

Pie de la Cuesta

Pie de la Cuesta (“foot of the slope”) goes on for miles of yellow sandy beach. Behind is Coyuca Lagoon, where you will find peace, nature, and a few good places to eat. This may be the best beach on the Pacific for watching the sun sink into the ocean at day’s end. The waves can be strong here. Usually uncrowded, Pie de la Cuesta is a favorite of couples.

Playas Caleta & Caletilla

Playas Caleta and its near twin, Caletilla, are Acapulco’s original and most traditional beaches. The aquarium and museum, Magico Mundo Marino, lies between them. Here there is food and music and lots of family activity. The waters are calm. Originally the beach of the Hollywood stars of the 50’s and 60’s, Caleta and Caletilla now appeal to tourists and locals alike, especially those with kids.

Roqueta and Marin Beaches

Take a water taxi or a glass-bottom boat from Caleta to Isla Roqueta, where two beaches await. Playa Roqueta and Playa Marin are quiet, rustic beaches in this nature preserve. They are a must for the ecotourist or anyone who wants an escape. Playa Roqueta is near where the boats dock. Playa Marin is a remote and undeveloped beach that can only be reached by making a small hike to the other side of the island.

Playa Angosta

Playa Angosta (“narrow beach”) is where locals go to avoid tourist crowds. This short strip of beach is on the Pacific Coast, between two tall rocky outcroppings, one inlet east of La Quebrada, where the cliff divers perform. From mid-August to mid-April you can see the sun set into the Pacific. It’s the only beach in Acapulco proper that offers such a view. Several local seafood restaurants serve up the food, beer and soft drinks.

Playas Manzanillo & Honda

These neighbors are on the bayside between Caleta and downtown. Look for the lighthouse or the marina. Several traditional seafood restaurants can be found on these very popular beaches. Fishermen moor their boats near here, and there’s a boat graveyard nearby.

Playa Tlacopanocha

Tlacopanocha is a popular beach at the end of the town pier (“the Malecón”). Here you can watch the cruise ships come and go during the season, as the marine terminal is nearby.

Playas Las Hamacas, Tamarindos, Hornos, Hornitos

These four beaches extend from the Marine Terminal near downtown to Parque Papagayo. They are the remaining beaches of Acapulco’s so-called “Nautical Zone” or “Traditional Zone.” Playa Las Hamacas is wide and flat, more visited by fishermen than sunbathers. Tamarindos and Hornos are long beaches, extending up the bay to the east. Large coconut palms line the entrances from the sidewalk along the Costera. They have excellent beach restaurants, umbrellas, loungers, tables, and calm waves. There is lots of space for the kids to run around. These beaches are mostly enjoyed by families. Hornitos is the last beach before the beginning of Acapulco’s “Golden Zone.” It is right in front of the town’s main flag pole at the entrance to Parque Papagayo.

Playa Morro

Playa Morro, just off the traffic circle at the Diana statue, is a transition from the traditional zone (more family-oriented) to the party focus of Condesa Beach farther east. Just off shore in the water is a hilly island (a “morro”), so it’s easy to find. Currents here can be trickier than at the beaches closer to downtown.

Playa Condesa

Playa Condesa is right in the middle of Acapulco’s “Golden Zone” (Parque Papagayo to the Naval Base). A big rock (called “La Redonda”) is just a few yards offshore. Condesa has lots of lively bars and dance clubs, and there is always a crowd, whether it be day or night. This is the most happening place for partiers, especially during “Spring Break.” A segment of Condesa (below “Beto’s”) is a popular beach for gays. The water can get choppy around the offshore rock formations, but there is always something happening up on the sand.

Icacos Beach

Playa Icacos, the Golden Zone’s second most happening beach, is much wider than Condesa from sea to back wall, with clear water and clean sand. Like Condesa, all sorts of water activities can be arranged, like waterskiing, jet-skis and rides. The hotels and condos of Costa Azul provide most of the sunbathers, and so the crowd tends to be a bit older than at Condesa and somewhat more upscale than in the traditional zone.

Playa Pichilingue

This beach is inaccessible to most people. It’s for guests at the Camino Real and residents of the gated community surrounding it. Waters are calm, as it is on the shore of the small bay of Puerto Marques.

Playa Puerto Marques & Majahua

Residents of Acapulco Diamante do not hesitate to say that Playa Puerto Marques and Playa Majahua are the best beaches in town — especially in late morning and early afternoon. Small by comparison with bayside beaches, they seem cozier and more tropical, as they are set in the lush mangroves around Puerto Marques. The waters are calm. Tourists do not seem to flock to these beaches, preferring the grander expanses of Playas Diamante and Revolcadero. Good shopping and good eating are also right at hand.

Playa Revolcadero

Playa Revolcadero (“tumbler beach”) and Playa Diamante are really one long and wide strip of sand on the Pacific Ocean near the Fairmont Hotels (Acapulco Princess & Pierre Marques) and the Mayan Palace. These are three of Acapulco’s most luxurious resorts. Here the chic and the fashionable come to enjoy the sun. Serious swimmers enjoy taking on the large waves that come rolling in. Unlike the waters on the bayside, the undertow at Revolcadero can be very strong.

Playa Larga

Playa Larga (“long beach”) seems to go on forever, east of Revolcadero, and continuing towards Barra Vieja, miles away. The airport property lies behind part of it. This is a place for ecotourism, or quiet retreats back to nature. There are campsites, a nearby hatchery for sea turtles and a couple of places to spend the night. There are not too many services (like umbrellas and chairs), few restaurants, and no vendors. Access by automobile is recommended (no public transportation).

Playa Bonfil

Past Playa Larga is Playa Bonfil, also very quiet and unoccupied. Here the waves get strong enough to provide decent surfing. It has a sandy bottom. Waves come right and left. Not much is there in the way of services.

Tres Vidas

Playa Tres Vidas (three-lives beach) is yet farther down the coast from Acapulco Diamante and almost to Barra Vieja. An exclusive golf resort has been built here. Very few visitors come, other than guests from the boutique hotel at the golf club, lovers and surfers.

Barra Vieja

At the far east of Acapulco, about 20 miles away, is a fishing village called Barra Vieja (old [sand]bar). Here you will find several restaurants and beach clubs, some of them absolutely first rate. They offer parking, showers, and beach facilities. You can eat, drink, sleep in the hammocks, swim in the pool, sun on the beach — whatever you like. It is perhaps as close to a real tropical paradise as you can get these days. Be sure to choose your beach club carefully or get a recommendation.

Should I stay in Ft Lauderdale or Cocoa Beach?

Only going to be staying a couple days. Not looking for a wild party, but still a fun atmosphere, and most importantly nice beaches for swimming and hanging out (not too interested in surfing). Not really concerned about the cost, just wondering if one place is distinctly better and why. Thanks!

Cocoa Beach has a lot more to do and its close to Kennedy Space Center. Its also close to Orlando. Cocoa Beach has better beaches and less crowded too. Won’t cost you an arm and a leg to stay either.

Travel Hawaii

The Lei is one of the first and oldest greetings in Hawaii ; synonymous with Aloha. It welcomes you to the Hawaiian Islands. The art of lei making could be lost if not for the enthusiastic younger generation. During Boat Days in the 1900’s, the lei would be given to welcome visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. The departing visitors would throw the lei into the sea in hopes of returning to the islands. The lei represents the warmest of Aloha to start and finish your vacation in paradise. Aloha is a sacred and powerful word expressing greetings, farewells, love, and a way of life, all in one word. The lei embraces this Aloha and passes this warm spirit on to each recipient. Thus, just having the Lei around your neck seems to convey soothing peaceful feeling. It is a great way to start to unwind and slip into a state of relaxation.
Relaxing in Hawaii is something you don’t have to learn, it comes to you all on its own. The locals call it Island time. The best way to start this Island time experience is to head for the beach, dig your toes in the sand, wade into the ocean, or just kick back in your beach chair and wait for it to arrive. Beaches are the best thing about tropical islands and they take thousands of years to become beaches. The Big Island is newer and, therefore, has fewer beaches. However, the Big Island’s beaches are pristine! All the beaches on the Orchid Island seem to have that perfect tropical look as you walk out of the palms onto the white sands.

Waikiki Beach located on the Island of Oahu, is perhaps the world’s most famous beach. It offers the perfect climate for one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. The temperature of the ocean varies from a summertime high of approximately 82°F, to a low of about 76°F during the coolest winter months. The two mile stretch of white sand coast is fronted by hotels and restaurants. The area is excellent for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, catamaran and outrigger canoe rides. When visiting Waikiki don’t miss an amazing Hawaiian evening with the Wakiki Starlight Luau at the Hilton Hawaiian Village! You can also experience a traditional gourmet Hawaiian feast fit for royalty at the Royal Hawaiian Luau.Enjoy the excitement of Waikiki’s world class hotels, dining and shopping. Take the time to explore historic Honolulu’s royal palaces, museums, and art galleries. Drive to the legendary North Shore and see the rustic surfing towns, local crafts, and famous beaches such as Banzai Pipeline. A great camera stop to photo some of the worlds best surfers. Oahu has a lot to offer and may be just the relaxing island paradise you have been looking for.
Kauai, known also as the “Garden Isle”,it lies 105 miles across the Kauai Channel, northwest of Oahu. It has numerous offerings for its sightseeing visitors such as rainforest, striking waterfalls and The Grand Canyon of the Pacific, ” Waimea Canyon. Waimea is one of the most scenic canyons in the world. It is 3,000 feet deep, formed by the Waimea River and the extreme rainfall running off of Mount Waialeale Mount Waialeale is known as the wettest place on earth and averaged more then 462 inches of rain a year. To add more to your sightseeing pleasure many of Kauai’s white sand beaches have been backdrops for the film industry such as the beaches of Hanalei. They have been famous for years by the filming of South Pacific. However, if your not making a movie you will find beaches with something for every beachcomber. Beaches for walking, sailing, surfing, sunbathing, fishing, picnicking, hiking, snorkeling, swimming, or just kicking back to relax and people-watch
Maui is known for its pristine beaches, natural scenic beauty and premier hotels. So where do you start your sightseeing journey? How about at the “House of the Sun.”
A perfect Maui day can start with breathtaking views from Haleakala Crater, watching the sunrise at 10,000 feet. The views from the House of the Sun are sensational but be prepared, the early morning will be chilly.
After the sun is up and you feel warm enough, take the time to explore the park’s unusual plant species. Few plants can live this high up in paradise but you will find a rare plant only found here, the Haleakala Silversword.
If your day in paradise needs a little more action, go down to the sea to meet other visitors. The whales visit Maui every year from November through May to mate and give birth in the warm Hawaiian waters. Maui waters are considered the best in the world for Humpback watching. February is peak Humpback watching time. If you are visiting Maui during the season, try one of the whale watching tours. It will be an exciting learning experience. As an added bonus you can join in the Whale Festival. It is a great celebration not to be missed.
For more exploration of the Island start with the Road to Hana.
Hana is an isolated, undeveloped tropical paradise on the eastern end of Maui. Your drive to Hana will take you along scenic rugged cliffs and shoreline with picturesque views. Plan to make stops along the way. There are a number of waterfalls cascading down into tropical pools to photograph. The drive to Hana can be demanding but exciting so you will need a place to talk about it and reward yourself. A good way is to have lunch in luxury at the Hana Hotel. If you are planning to stay for the night, the ocean view from the sea ranch cottages is superb.
For more sightseeing visit the wonderful historic town of Lahaina, the crown jewel of Maui. The beaches of Maui are first on the list but Lahaina is the second most visited place on Maui. This charming historic whaling village has many of the old buildings still standing. They are now boutique shops and restaurants. Some are located on Front Street. Lahaina’s Front Street is located right on the western beaches of Maui. So you will have some exciting views when you are shopping or dining!
If you need to get away from the beach scene, Maui has some world renowned golf courses to play.
Be careful relaxing in Hawaii’s endless summer could become very addictive!
Mahalo

What to do on Your Next Big Island Vacation

You’ve decided that you want to visit the Big Island for your next Hawaiian vacation destination and have an idea of where you are going to stay, but what will you do when you get there?

With 2,028 square miles of land surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, planning your itinerary can become an intimidating task. There are dozens of activities to choose from!

A no-brainer approach when visiting the Island of Hawaii is to make a trip to the beach. Black sand or not, you’ll be in awe at how beautiful the Big Island’s coastline can be. Take up a surf lesson on the west side in Kona, or rent some snorkeling gear and explore the colorful reefs in the east side. Just want to veg out? Slap on that sunscreen, grab a good read or two, and work on your tan.

For the history buffs, there are lots of places important in Hawaii’s culture that you can visit and soak up lots of information. Up in north Kohala on the Kona side of the Big Island, you will find King Kamehameha I’s birthplace. In nearby Kailua-Kona, you can visit Mokuaikaua Church – the very first missionary church that was established in Hawaii.

See the Big Island from a Bird’s eye view! Hilo helicopter tours or Kona helicopter tours are a great alternative to your usual tourist activities. Otherwise hard-to-reach areas by car or foot can easily be viewed from up in the sky with a helicopter ride. Be amazed as you hover close by to cascading waterfalls, luscious green forests, and views of the entire crystal-clear waters off the coasts.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is one of Hawaii’s largest and most dependable helicopter tour companies, and they have all the tools you need to help you choose the perfect Hilo helicopter tour or Kona helicopter tour. On their website, each helicopter ride has an easy to read map that indicates which areas are covered in your tour. You won’t regret cruising the Hawaiian skies with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters! Book your flight today!

For as long as there have been surfers, there has been an accepted standard of what was normal-finless redwood planks in the 20s, longboards in the 60s, single-fins in the 70s, thrusters in the 80s and 90s. But today, there is no standard; there is no norm. There is only a group of surfers that are going their own way. FIN is an examination of the current state of the art, a time in surfing cultur…

Tips From Hawaiians to Survive Surfing in Hawaii

Hawaii is world renowned for its pounding surf. World famous breaks include Pipeline, Waimea, and Sunset beaches, where wave heights can frequently climb to over twenty five feet. Maui and the Big Island have lots of spectacular breaks as well, including Jaws, and Hapuna Beach. If you are an adventurous traveler, you are likely to take your chances surfing at least some of the Island’s less bone cracking breaks. Please take some time to go over a few tips from us at Discover Hawaii Tours that ought to make your surfing attempts an all around safer and more fun experience.

First things first, if the waves look too big for you to handle you should probably trust your gut. If you are uncertain about the conditions you can always ask the lifeguards, or surfers fresh from a session. Unless you are a skilled swimmer, entering the fray without surfing experience can truly be a dangerous experience. You are going to have to contend with not only the relentless pounding of the waves, but the jagged coral below the water as well. The reefs can sometimes be located just a few feet below the water level. In addition to being razor sharp in some spots, they are also crawling with spiny sea urchins that will truly mess up your day if you land hard on one.

A great way to avoid these dangers is to start out in Waikiki beach, where the Waikiki Beach Boys will be more than happy to lead you to what may very well be the best spot in the world to safely learn the basics of surfing. They offer equipment rentals and will keep a sharp eye on you while you are learning the ropes.

Speaking of equipment, a surfboard can at once be your most important surfing tool and a hindrance, if not handled properly. Chances are the first few times you try surfing you are going to be doing so on a nice big long board. A larger board makes it much easier for one to learn to balance, but it can also be cumbersome while maneuvering in the waves. If you happen to wipe out, you could have to worry about being dragged around by the hefty board strapped to your ankle. Also, you are likely not the only beginner surfer out there, and being hit by an out of control long board is surely going to leave a mark. Another tip when surfing with long boards is to be careful when returning to the surface of the water. If you shoot to the surface without looking up you might be met with a very surprising and spine crunching thud as you attempt to emerge from the water directly below your floating board.

Despite the risks, in general, having a surf board with you is a good thing for people trying to ride the waves. They provide a buoy that you can always cling to in times of distress, and make for exhilarating rides when mastered. When out there among other surfers, don’ be pushy, especially if you are truly inexperienced. Let the more skilled surfers have the waves they want, learn from them, and bide your time until your wave comes on through.

Believe it or not, having a board is not necessarily a must have for surfing in Hawaii. Body surfing is a great way to experience the waves, but it too can get a bit hectic for beginners. For one, being a lone body surfer among surfers is a great way to get yourself run over. You certainly don’t want to have those fins slash over you as you float near the break. There are lots of surfing spots on the islands that are specifically body surfing spots. Frequently, bodysurfing locations have shorter, heavier waves that sometimes break near the beach. For instance, Sandy beach on Oahu is legendary for being a world class body-surfing location. The surf is nearly always up, and visitors and locals alike flock to this beach in droves. Sandy beach is otherwise known as break-neck beach, which should be enough said for inexperienced swimmers thinking about checking out this awesome break.

If you just can’t help from testing it out, please take these tips with you. For one, entering the water can be a challenge in itself. You are going to want to time your charge with the crashing of the waves. Once you see an opening, don’t hesitate. You want to get out past the breakers as quickly as possible. Dive under the waves as you head for deeper water until you find yourself out of the break zone. Once there, enjoy, because getting in is going to be an adventure. Watch the way locals approach bodysurfing, and mimic them on the smaller sets that come through. If you see them catch an amazing wave, don’t hesitate to let them know. If you spread a little aloha you are going to get that aloha back, which might be in the form of acknowledgment of a nice wave you rode or assistance if you find yourself in trouble. Inevitably you are going to get sucked over the falls, which means you are going to get sucked up and out of the wave into the turbulent white-water. What exactly this feels like is hard to describe but it’s akin to being in a washing machine. This is where one can be seriously injured. Firstly, do not stick your arms out in an attempt to stop yourself. Doing so is an easy way to land awkwardly on the sand which, coupled with the power of the wave in which you are caught up, can easily wreak havoc on any flailing limbs. Our second tip is to tuck your chin and close your mouth. This will help keep your spinal cord in tact should you end up landing on your head. It should also keep your teeth from crumbling out of your mouth, which is always something to smile about.

If you happen to experience going over the falls don’t let your guard down when you finally regain your footing. Waves don’t stop. So, before you get pounded again, you are going to have to decide whether you are going to go back on out there, or head on in.

If you follow these rules you are likely going to have a good time learning to surf in Hawaii. As was mentioned before, pay attention to the way the more seasoned surfers are going about riding the waves and you should pick it up after a little fine tuning. If you are at any time feeling distressed do not hesitate to call for help. Being labeled as a newbie surfer is much better than struggling alone to stay afloat. If you want to get an idea of some of the various surf spots around the island, consider joining Discover Hawaii Tours as we have tours that drive by nearly every major surf break on the island. If the waves seem overwhelming from the comfort of our deluxe air conditioned buses, you might want to leave that spot off of your list. Take it from Discover Hawaii Tours; they are a lot bigger up close.

About the Author

Benjamin Herrick 2010 graduate of the University of Hawaii

is it hard to catch a wave?

its been my life dream recently to surf inside the pipeline, but ive never surfed, i know i have to start from the bottom, but i dont want to get my hopes up just to have them crushed by the next wave.
is it really hard

You have very ambitious goals my friend. However, the Pipeline may be an unrealistic goal. But, nothing is impossible. Everybody who surf had to start someplace. I have been surfing for 45 years, and there was a “day one” for me, too. But, before you even think about surfing, there are some things you should understand. Surfing is an ocean sport, that should only be practiced by persons who are already competent ocean swimmers. Swimming in a pool is neat, but it’s not ocean swimming, with undertows, rip tides and sometimes BIG waves. I have seen lots of great pool swimmers get rescued. So, my first tip on how to surf is to be at home in the ocean. There are way too many dangerous people in the water now. They are a danger to themselves and other surfers, don’t join their ranks. You might already be comfortable in the ocean, we don’t know taht much about you.

Lessons are the best way to start. Lessons can come from a professional instructor, or surfing family members or experienced surfing friends. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don’t want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. The last thing experienced surfers want is for inexperienced people to just grab a board, rush into the surf and get in our way. Lessons shorten the learning curve significantly. And they help keep ignorant, un-prepared kooks out of the water and out of the way of more experienced surfers. .

Are there any indoor surfing on the east coast of the US?

I want to learn to surf, but it’s pretty cold on the east coast right now. My dad was telling me about indoor surfing lessons. Does anyone know anything about them, and/or possibly any locations? Thanks!

Indoor surfing isn’t surfing. It may be fun, but it is nothing like surfing.Surfing is an ocean sport, that should only be practiced by persons who are already competent ocean swimmers. Swimming in a pool is neat, but it’s not ocean swimming, with undertows, rip tides and sometimes BIG waves. I have seen lots of great pool swimmers get rescued. They are a danger to themselves and other surfers, don’t join their ranks. We don’t know too much about you. Maybe you already have the ocean skills. You will have plenty of time to start when the weather warms up.

Please don’t pay any attention to the jimman. Perhaps he plays at surfing, but after 45 years of surfing, I have seen too many people get in trouble because they don’t know their limitations and really don’t understand the ocean. I rescued too many expert “pool” swimmers not to understand the difference.

You need to begin the first day or two in San Francisco in case you prepare to take at least a week. Remain in San Francisco for a minimum of a long day to see all the major sights. These include Fisherman’s wharf, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Undoubtedly, be sure to dine from you choice of several of the great restaurants within the city. Harry Denton’s is locally famous for ambience and an amazing view of the entire city from above. After you leave the SF, travel down hwy 1 along the ocean passing Mission Beach and for that next hr you’ll be awed by the gorgeous shoreline from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. A couple of miles just before Santa Cruz is Waddell Creek plus a great spot to turn off and get a break. Waddell Creek is world famous in the kite boarding/wind Surfing community. Across the street from this beach is also the entrance to Big Basin park which still has some giant old growth redwoods. You’ll now be getting into Santa Cruz or Surf City as its commonly referred to as. In the event you want to slap on a wetsuit and give surfing a try, then head down to Cowell’s Beach by the Boardwalk for the best beginner waves.

Here you are able to rent longboards, wetsuits and even a lesson if you’d like. During low tide, the waves at Cowell’s is a perfect rolling mushy wave that is easy and forgiving to catch. This type of wave is called a party wave as a bunch of people can get up on it and ride. Its a load of fun. Following this you’ll be able to cruise a lot more beautiful coastline down to Monterey. In Monterey you can spend some time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium or take a drive on 17 mile drive. The aquarium has close up views of many of the creatures that live off the shores and 17 mile drive tours along the coast interweaving the beautiful coast, wildlife and world famous golf courses. The next and last stop on this journey is Carmel. Carmel by the Sea is very laid back and strolling about town feels so right when you’re there. The gorgeous white sand seashore with views of Peeble Seaside lies at the end of the downtown strip. There are many Carmel Vacation Rentals to select from when staying here. It offers you much more space than a hotel and is a fantastic way to keep a large group together enjoying each others company.

There are also Carmel Cottages in the Carmel Highlands, Carmel condos downtown or expansive ocean estates seaside. There’s sure to be a fantastic fit for any group. Following cruising the California coast, kicking back again in Carmel permits you to get all that you have taken in and smile.

Santa Monica is one of the most beautiful areas of the Los Angeles area. It’s actually situated between Los Angeles and the bay of the same name, and at just over 8 square miles, it’s a pedestrian friendly city that offers easy access to restaurants, shopping, and attractions for both residents and visitors. It’s also known as the most educated city in the nation

Santa Monica was originally settled by the Spanish in the 1500’s, and got its name from a Franciscan priest in 1769, who said he was inspired by the natural springs to name it after “Saint Monica”. After the wars with Mexico, the United States was awarded those lands, and California became a state in 1850. It immediately became a vacation land for people who lived in cold climates, and it’s grown from that point on. It was incorporated as a city in 1887.

Santa Monica has always had a history of being the place for the rich and powerful. In the past, the likes of Will Rogers, Greta Garbo, Harold Lloyd, Mae West, Louis B. Mayer, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, and William Randolph Hearst lived and mingled with rich visitors in the area. These days, you’re just as likely to see residents such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Ted Danson and Mary Steenbergen, Jane Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Tom Selleck dining in restaurants and shopping in many of the stores.

Santa Monica is home to many major landmarks which attract sightseers to the community. There’s the Parkhurst Building, which was constructed by a former mayor of the city, Charles Parkhurst, and was designated a historical landmark in 1978. There’s the Miramar Hotel, which still exists today as a luxury hotel, which used to also be the home to stars such as Greta Garbo, its first resident after it was built. There’s the Miles Playhouse, built in 1929 and still used today to put on theater productions. And finally, the Looff Hippodrome, built in 1916 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, built in a fantasy style with what looks like a merry-go-round on top of the building, and reminds people of what they imagined the Old West would have looked like if every community had a lot of money. And you can’t visit Santa Monica without going to Santa Monica Pier, which is loaded with amusement park attractions, shops, and restaurants.

Of course, Santa Monica is really known for its beach, aptly named Santa Monica Beach, which of course access the Pacific Ocean. With an average of 340 sunny days a year and a very temperate climate, it’s the perfect getaway for swimming, Surfing, fishing and beach volleyball. There’s usually an ocean breeze which adds to the comfort, and the beach is kept very clean.

Finally, there’s some of the most spectacular houses in the world in Santa Monica. Many of them are older homes that have been refurbished and updated. There’s the Niemeyer-Strick home, built in 1964 by Oscar Niemeyer, a Brazilian architect who won the 1988 Pritzker Prize for design, but was originally not allowed to have his name on the permits because he supported communism at the time. There’s the Zuni House, built in 1923 in the style of Mayan architecture. And you have the Marion Davies Estate, which was built by William Randolph Hearst right on the ocean front for movie star Marion Davies.

Though Santa Monica is home to the rich and famous, the city also keeps a record of what they call “affordable units”, which can be obtained from any redevelopment agencies in the area. Consumers can find rental properties or regular residential properties all over the city, but most of it isn’t cheap. You will find multi-million dollar homes in Santa Monica, mainly close to the beach, and the prices will range from upwards of $8 million down to $290,000 for homes in the area. Leasing will average around $2,500 if people wish to go that route.

Santa Monica is both a resident and visitors paradise.

Surfers Paradise is the commercial heart of the Australian Gold Coast. Here you will find shopping, night clubs, and lots of live entertainment. This is a busy hopping place that attracts families, teens and 40 somethings alike. The beaches are best in the morning as the high rise buildings shade the beach in the afternoon sun. The beaches are not the main attraction in Surfers any more. If you are looking for a nice quiet beach, this is not the place, head a bit further north.

The main drag through Surfers is Cavill Avenue. Cavill ends at the beach or seaside. Orchid avenue is the hot spot for all the bars and night clubs. Surfers Paradise is split on either side by the Gold Coast Highway.

Although Cavill Mall is the recognized centre of Surfers, new up market shopping precinct Circle on Cavill is the new heart of Surfers Paradise and can be found bounded by cavil Ave, Surfers Paradise Blvd and Ferny Ave.Japanese visitors will be pleased to find that most street signs are written in both English and Japanese ” a reflection of the strong attraction the Gold Coast has for Japan. Surfers have many sights worth visiting apart from the beach. Infinity is a walk-through maze cleverly disguised by an elaborate sound and light show which is a winner for the children. At 230 metres high, you wont miss the Q1 building. The Observation deck at the top has 360 degree panorama of the Gold Coast and its hinterland. On a clear day you can see north to Brisbane and south to Byron Bay. Wander around the glass-enclosed deck and youll learn other interesting facts about the building .There is also a caf an comfy lounge chairs so there is no need to hurry back down to the ground.

All along the beach you can find kayaking and surfing schools. These schools cater to beginners as well as intermediates. The cost is anywhere from $40 to $50 for a two hour lesson. For a more adrenaline pumping experience, try the Jetboat Extreme. This turbo charged twin jet powered custom jet boat propels youn across the water at amazing speeds. Bungee jumping is another heart pounding experience. Adrenaline park offers many bungee type experiences for the brave at heart.

For something a bit less crazy, don’t forget to go whale watching between June and November or go on a three hour horse riding trek through beautiful rain forest and river scenery in the Numinbah Valley,230 kms south of Nerang.

For the family trip of a lifetime book a reservation at Gold Coast accommodation.
Gold Coast hotels offer something for every one in every budget and star level.

surfing in florida?

im going to naples in august are there and surf spots around there and i need places for lessons.

Wrong coast. You might get lucky and get some waves though, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Maybe there will be some tropical activity in the gulf to help you out.
