PARENTS! What would you do if your teen was doing this?

Well I know a 17 yr old guy and he spends like 12-14 hrs a day online…mostly in a chat room but also youtube and myspace or just Surfing. Anyway, all of his “frinds” came from this chat room where they are all ppl he has never met and probably never will. He has no real life friends and has never had a real gf…only internet gf’s? He even goes to school online becasue he can’t handle a reg. school. He wants to be a rockstar someday and plays the guitar but is so lazy he sometimes doesn’t even want to go to lessons. He isn’t doing well in school becasue he thinks he will be a musician and won’t need school anyway. He has many emotional problems but refuses meds and no longer feels therapy is useful so doesn’t go. What would you do? He stays up until 4-5 am online and is lazy most of the day. What are your thoughts on this and does he have much of a future with this behavior? Thanks

Either he goes to school or he gets a job. No exceptions.

Some Advice for New Composers on How Music Theory Can Enhance Your Songwriting

Putting together a song is an extra special way of attaining catharsis, though the process itself can be just as excruciating as the load of burden being purged. To facilitate the job of penning a song, realize promptly that there are rudiments and methods in place to get those feelings on ‘paper.’ I can already sense the frustration at the concept of having to hold back creativity by abiding to a structure. Breathe, chill out and realize that these are more so guidelines that can be bent and smashed as you see fit. Over time, you’ll find your creative abilities take hold and all the rudiments will run on autopilot. As fun as it might be to stumble around in the dark, trying to figure things out on your own, learning will make life a whole lot easier!

Regardless of the fact that you’re artistically gifted, you’re here to improve as a songwriter Skill makes up for a lot though passion will help drive you through the ruts and help you unearth the means to make your idea a certainty. Aside talent and passion, honesty is going to help make your songs truly your own. Without it, you’re just going to come off as one more artsy-hack trying to fake it. It’s this directness, and readiness to share all that you are to the world that will help you relate with your listeners. Your audience will feel the passion in your songs if you sing it like you mean it.

Lyricists and poets aren’t always one in the same. Most beginners are going off of their teenage, high school experiences writing poems for English class, and believe that their prime expertise qualifies them to create songs. This is a good starting point, though you’ll be kicking yourself when you realize that you’ve written a splendid line and can’t find anything to rhyme it to, shortly in a verse. Pause for a moment, and realize that not only can a song chock full of rhymes sound amateur and repetitive, it is constraining, and in time, grating.

Song lyrics, or just the words themselves, can bend and move to accommodate the music that goes along with it. You’ve probably heard two unbelievably un-rhyme-able words somehow strung together in a song or two. This is a consideration for the writer. Also realize, and it’s best to acknowledge this now, that certain lines and words just don’t want to fit with the music, and you’ll find that much of your time will be spent rehashing and redoing all your work. As I mentioned before, your passion will push you through the trials and bring your ideas to life.Having to write about should never be a problem Unless you’re a heartless robot, you feel emotion on a day by day basis. If you walk out of the house, surf the internet, turn on the t.v., read, or god-willing, have an authentic conversation with at least one person at some point in the week, you should have stories to tell. If it’s even mildly inspiring that you feel an itch to record it down, write. Songs are finest when it’s about what you’re most familiar with, and there’s nothing you will know better than your history and feelings. Your first labors may sound plain and childish at first though this is where your originality will grow from. Your special technique will develop with time and repetition.

All I’ve mentioned so far has been motivational, nice, and inspiring stuff that can be drawn from inside yourself. Every passion, your talent, history, passion, and basic understanding of writing lyrics will take you far. Now, let’s step it up a little bit.

What makes a song a song is its arrangement. Songs often consist of an introduction, a verse, a chorus, an additional verse, an added chorus, and a coda ( aka: Outro ). You can see it as the organization of a book or story, though it’s best to do so only temporarily, since not all songs will include a definite story arc, or not have a story, at all. The song composition itself, can be altered to your needs, though the structure follows the song’s melody, which is established at the beginning of the song.

Uh-oh, ‘melody,’ you say, what is that! It’s alright, it’s much easier than you believe it to be! It’s the soul, the very essence of the song. That portion of your favorite song that you can hum,and someone on the street can hear and know, right away;that’s the melody. Establish a rhythm and pattern to form a basic melody, by repeating a line from the verse. This, in tremendously simple terms, is going to be your melody. From here on in, you will be forming following lines, verses, and choruses based on this melody, and complimenting it accordingly. It is also at this point that I advocate that yet another, very valuable tool to add to your toolbox as a songwriter, is a little music theory. There are definitely hundreds of hit songs produced with no a simple grasp of music but we’re here to make the process easier. Understanding music theory will help you share your ideas with other musicians.

As great as it may be to reach into your heart and soul, it’s best to know that unless you’re a talented virtuoso , which is not a requirement, it will take dedication, practice, and time. Express yourself wholeheartedly by believing in your natural talents and sharing yourself wholeheartedly. Snags will come along the way, though your passions will help you push through them, and convey all that you mean to your audience. Each emotion felt, and adventure tackled, is a muse, worth sharing with the world, and with just a little bit of correct training, and a grasp of standard musical dogma you can sharpen your skills and be a winning songwriter.

Learning to Surf – to do list & top preparations

1. Find a surf spot with a beginner friendly beach preferably with warm water and without crowds. A sand bottom beach break with long gentle rolling white water is perfect for a first timer. Costa Rica is an ideal spot for learning to surf. Another good idea would be to book a trip at a surf camp where you can get specialized progressive lessons, daily guidance and a emersion environment.

2. Take at least 1-2 lesson before you jump in to it. Make sure to find a qualified surf instructor who has at least 8-10 years Surfing experience and at least 2 years teaching experience. Surfing can be dangerous and without basic board management, crowd awareness and ocean knowledge instruction a fun day at the beach can turn in to trip to the hospital or worse.

3. Pick a proper surf board to learn on. Usually when you start out its on a bigger board or long board 8-10ft and as you improve you can move down in size.

4. Start working on dropping any extra unnecessary pounds if you need to. The lighter and fitter you show up the easier it will be for you as well as your instructor.

5. A simple fitness regimen 3-4 weeks prior will do wonders for your stamina. Push ups, pull ups, crunches, and lying back extensions are great, if you work with weights utilize circuit training. work more medium to light weights with high repetitions progressively decreasing rest time between sets, also give some attention to your posterior deltoids.

6. Upper body cardio is king. The hardest part about learning to surf is the demanding paddling. Any type of cardio is good, but you should do some upper body cardio such as paddling, Rows, boxing aerobics, Swimming laps etc.

7. Get a balance board. Indo boards are great for practicing weight distribution and relaxed balancing. They also will help get your legs toned and in shape. They come with dvd’s to show you how. You can do 10-15 minutes a day in your living room on the carpet in front of the TV easily. You should be able to find one at any board sport or sporting good store.

8. Make sure you can hold your breath for at least 20 seconds. When you start you will be in shallow water(about 4-6 feet deep), but a wipe out can still put you under for a few seconds and the more breath you have the more relaxed you’ll be.

9. Flexibility: If you do yoga that’s great or just a simple 10 min daily stretching regimen focusing on limbering your legs, chest, arms, and back

10. Educate your self. Go google crazy. There is tons of info online about surfing tips, ocean knowledge, surf reports, surf equipment. .
Pura Vida & Aloha

The Motorola Milestone 2 Is An Excellent Option For Surfing The Web

Motorola is soon to release the updated version of their popular Android smartphone, the Motorola Milestone. Named simply the Motorola Milestone 2, this new and improved handset features some great upgrades ion its specifications.

The latest version of the Android OS (2.2 Froyo) makes an appearance, alongside a 1 GHz processor and 8 GB of internal storage making it a generally more powerful and capable all rounder than its highly impressive predecessor.

Users who prefer a physical QWERTY keyboard alongside a touchscreen are sure to be impressed with the Motorola Milestone 2. Offering the best of both worlds, the slide out QWERTY keyboard offers efficient text entry, whilst the 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen offers a great means of navigating the Motoblur UI. Another impressive feature of the screen is the Swype text input method. Should users choose to operate the on screen keyboard, for example if they only have one free hand, they can simply slide their fingertip from letter to letter without it leaving the screen. With a little practice, this feature can greatly improve text entry speeds. The screen also features accelerometer and proximity sensors as standard.

In order to alert users to calls and messages, both vibration and ringing are utilised, with the added bonus of assigning MP3 and WAV files as custom ringtones. A 3.5mm audio jack and a speakerphone system provide the means to carry out handsfree communication on the go.

A generous 8 GB of internal storage is provided as standard which is ample for storing most average sized digital music collections. An additional 8 GB is provided in the shape of a pre-installed memory card within the micro SD slot. This can however be replaced with a memory card of up to 32 GB giving the potential to gain 40 GB total storage.

Users of the Motorola Milestone 2 are assured of a great internet browsing experience, thanks to both HSDPA (in areas with 3G coverage) and Wi-Fi connections. The latter provides the fastest internet surfing, which is a breeze thanks to the built in web browsing software. Additional connectivity features include GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth and micro USB.

A handy 5 megapixel camera is built in, which gives an impressive photography experience, catering for both budding photographers and simply those who like to take spontaneous snapshots when out and about. This is thanks to its ease of use combined with a package of powerful features for image enhancement and manipulation. These include autofocus, dual LED flash, image stabilisation and geo-tagging which operates based on GPS.

The versatility of the Android platform means users can customise and expand to their hearts content. Access to the Android Market is provided to allow users to browse and download apps from loads of different categories, making the Motorola Milestone the ultimate all rounder, and a rival to many more established smartphone models.

Surviving Your First International Flight

The big day has arrived – a holiday in a far away foreign country. You are all packed and ready to go. You have your passport, plane ticket, and some way to pay for your next few weeks. You are nervous an anxious and ready to go. Here are a few pointers to make your long flight a little more pleasant.

Before you go.

Pack as light as possible. You should have no more than two suitcases and one carry-on. If you are going to a tropical climate it will be even easier packing shorts and T-shirts. And, you can always pick up some new clothes at your destination.

Ensure that you have all of your medications and copies of your prescriptions. Check on the latest rules for carrying liquids in your carry-on. The rules and regulations change with the weather – so keep current.

Re-confirm your flight. My last trip was almost delayed by a day or two as a typhoon hit Taiwan and my flight from Hawaii was going through Taipei. I scrambled and got my flight changed to one that went through Tokyo, Japan and managed to get to Thailand as scheduled. I didn’t check ahead of time and fortunately was able to get on a different flight. I learned my lesson. While re-confirming, get your seat assignment. I prefer exit rows for more legroom.

Double check that you have everything. I use a checklist and check it 2 or 3 times before I go. Really make sure that you have your passport, tickets and some way to pay – cash, ATM card, credit card or traveler’s checks. A combination is a good way to make sure that you have alternative means of paying. If you are going to a country that has its own currency, plan to exchange a day or two’s worth at the destination airport. Don’t change money in your home country – you will get a terrible rate.

At your home airport

Plan to get to your airport about 3 hours ahead of your flight departure. Check-in and security lines can be long and slow. Have your travel documents ready to show wherever you go. Again, check on the rules for what you can bring with your on the flight – especially in your carry-on.

I always eat at the airport before I fly. Things have gotten better and cheaper at airports and I prefer to have a meal in me and not rely on the airline food. I also bring some trail mix with me to munch on during the flight.

Take advantage of the duty free shops. Get your booze, cigarettes and other goodies for tax-free prices. Check the limitations at your destination country before you buy 6 bottles of whiskey and find out you are only allowed to bring in one. Also check to see if you can carry liquids on flights that have a layover or two. You may have to make your purchase at the layover before your last leg.

You can kill time playing with any electronic toys you own. Wireless access is usually available in the airports so you can check email and surf. You can also listen to some music if you have an Ipod of something similar. Wireless can be found in most airports right outside the Airline lounges. You don’t have to be a member to sit outside and tap into their unsecured network.

On the flight

Try to relax and sleep as much as possible. The time zone changes and jet lag will be lessened. Avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water, especially on longer flights. Dehydration comes easily on long flights in dry cabin air. You can drink booze when you arrive.

Read and watch a movie to kill time. Do some of the puzzles in the on-board magazines. Keep busy as much as possible. Have some mints and gum to alleviate the air pressure during take-off and landing.

I usually avoid the main course of the airline food. I do eat the salad, bread and dessert. The main meal is rarely edible. This is why I eat before I go and eat my own snacks.

You will have to fill out a customs declaration form on the plane to turn in to the Custom’s officer. Do this on the plane and stick it with your passport.

Arrival

Head out of the plane as quickly as possible. You and everyone else will have to go through Immigration/Customs – so the race is on. Hopefully, you were given instructions before deplaning. If not, just follow the signs. Don’t stop to smoke or use the bathroom. Get in the shortest line and have your passport ready. Keep a copy of your boarding pass with you, just in case.

Be pleasant and polite to the Custom’s officer, get your passport stamped, turn in your customs declaration, and head for the luggage carousels. Make sure you have your own luggage and find the currency exchange.

Change enough money to last you a day or two. ATMs are conveniently located around the world, so a debit card is the easiest way to get local currency. It can be a little more risky using a credit card. Get your money and head for the exit.

Find the taxi or bus line and head to your hotel. You made it! Now, enjoy your vacation.

Ballroom dancing has bounced back because of the exposure this great sport has received through the media and the various dance shows broadcasted on numerous channels. A sort of craze has developed, especially amongst the youth and the teenagers. If you are also willing to learn ballroom dance, then you have to keep the following things in mind before you get on the floor.

First of all choose your dance form. If you are passionate about dancing and if it is your dream to become a dancer, well then watch its various forms and pick the favorite one, the one which you would love to perform. Then you can surf through the internet or the local newspapers, radio or television or just stroll down the city to find out a good dance class or a dance teacher for yourself.

Once you have done that you can start to learn ballroom dance basics and put your heart and soul into it. Diverse universities across America offer facilities for ballroom dancing. It is rightly said that “practice makes man perfect”. To emerge into a good dancer, a lot of practice is very essential. You should not become conscious of the crowd while dancing and have no hesitation of any kind. Moreover, you should go online and find out more about the dance form you have selected and even watch dance acts or performances of others.

It could be a television show or a competition or simply a dance party. You get to pick up various techniques and styles and even learn to create and enhance your own techniques. The habit of warming up before any dance is really a good thing to do. It helps you come into the mode and the mood of the dance performance. You muscles have to be stretched and loosened up. You should always go for a five to six minute warm up session before the practice or the performance begins.

When the learning session begins, you have to get involved but at the same time be careful. Foot stamping, tangling while turning and bumping into each other is a common thing to happen while you are engaged in the activity.

Footwork is the most important technique in any ballroom dancing form. It is always wise to keep you feet together while learning than to keep those apart, so as to learn to balance yourself. While managing your kick steps you have to take care that your toes point downwards and not upwards. Another important component when you’re out to learn ballroom dance is catching the beat. Once, you learn to do that, you have come half way for sure. Balancing also includes a bit of grounding work to be done. Grounding is to place your feet on the floor and avoid slipping.

To manage this properly, you have to push yourself to the ground through the centre of you feet. Grounding would also enhance your techniques and make your footwork look clean and clear. In case you are willing to go beyond the basics and want to learn ballroom dance forms for performances at social events, college functions, parties etc. then you can go for more than one forms of this dance.

If you wish to learn an easy form, then tango is the form you should opt for. You can join a class or learn it online, but one thing is rest assured that once you start to learn ballroom dance, you will definitely want more and more of it.

Video Production Camps at iD Tech Summer Computer Camps

Surfing in the pristine waters of La Jolla or San Diego CA. on a sunny morning. Sounds good? It gets better when you spend the balmy afternoons learning digital video editing or movie-making from the pros. A California summer camp at iD Tech Camps is all set to make your summer a well balanced blend of fun and learning. Loads of youngsters are signing up for this much-awaited surf – cum – movie camp, where you can exercise your body and mind and have total fun in the bargain.

A couple of weeks spent in doing the same thing over and over again can get terribly dull. No wonder many campers are relieved to get back home. This hybrid camp is designed to keep boredom at bay with half the day spent on the beautiful beaches learning the amazing sport of surfing, and the other half in the computer lab making movies or perfecting your digital video editing skills. Surfing Equipment (including a wetsuit and a board) and computers loaded with the latest software will be provided.

And the best thing about the camp is that YOU decide when you will do what the day you arrive at our California summer camps. You get the flexibility of deciding whether you want to spend the mornings in the lab and the afternoons on the beach or vice versa. Lunch is sometime between surf time and tech time. A typical daily schedule at our movie – cum – surf camp consists of three hours of tech instruction and three hours of surf instruction.

Tech instruction will focus primarily on digital video editing and production, while surfing instruction will emphasize surfing techniques, ocean skills, etiquette and safety. The camper: staff ratio is limited to 6: 1, while the camper: surf instructor ratio is 7: 1 on an average. Please note that there will be no surf instruction on Fridays, though camp will still be in session.
