There are different longboard decks

If there’s a single point that folks generally seek to do, then it really is to search out tactics by which they are able to elevate the adrenaline amounts in their entire body. And for that valid reason, they invented the sport of surf boarding. By cruising across waves behind a pace boat furnished quite a bit of thrill.

And this activity was migrated to your land as well, inside the kind of skateboards. People today started out accomplishing a variety of hard methods on the skateboard, and it’s got now develop into a major activity. In contrast, longboard decks are made use of much more for cruising than to be executing any unsafe tricks.

Longboard decks are far more about heading fast than performing methods. It weighs a lot and its heavy bulk could be really advantageous. As a result of this massive bodyweight, you’ll be able to ensure that it’ll get lots of momentum if you go downhill.

You’ll be able to make quite a bit of velocity within this way therefore you would also be able to conduct races utilizing these long boards. The style of a very long board can also be somewhat unique and this allows the rider to make turns in a far more fashionable method than would have been attainable using a skateboard.

Considering the longboard decks can make a good deal of speed, it will be most effective to ensure that you simply put on helmets and knee pads and protect your self from getting injured. With no this protection, you’ll not be capable to make certain that you don’t get injured even in case of an accident.

Because of the high speeds, it is normally achievable that you simply may shed management of your prolonged board. This could be quite hazardous, particularly for those who fall awkwardly. You might harm some portion of your respective body, and if it’s a sensitive spot, then you could get impacted incredibly badly.

The design and style of longboard decks can be found in different shapes. The 3 most typical shapes will be the pintail, drop via and flat nose. Every style and design has its very own solid and weak points and it can be approximately you to decide which 1 you’d wish to use.

The reality is, you’ll be able to customise your long board in these kinds of a means you could have every one of the areas which you want and make 1 for by yourself. Earlier than carrying out that, you would also require to be sure which you know what you’re undertaking. If not, the wrong blend could be extremely problematic and result in accidents.

About the Author

Ryan Kopecky is a freelance blogger and writer and enjoys writing on a broad range of topics

Types of longboards for a no-experience beginner?? (mom buying for kid)?

Okay, so this is my eldest daughter’s account….but i’m asking for my youngest daughter. I would love to buy her a longboard for christmas, she has finally convinced me, even though i’m still VERY iffy about it all.
So she’s been nagging me about a longboard all year long. She’s never skateboarded before, or surfed or anything like that. She wants to use the board for transportation. Like riding it to school, or in the less busy parts of town with her friends. She is about 5′3 or 5′4 and 176 lbs, i just would want to know what kind of board to get her.
There is a CCS store in the mall here that sells longboards…but i want this to be a surprise and she doesn’t really care about designs, although she has hinted that she likes the sector 9s (i think that’s the name…,ha ha once again im a mom) so what kind of board should i get her? please nothing that will break the bank too bad…i still have bills and such…

Longboarding is a great form or transportation as well exercise. As long as you also get a helmet, she will be fine.

Now about the board. Honestly, Sector 9 decks are not that great, but as a beginner, it will work. Many beginners do not know much about other brands besides Sector 9, Original, and Loaded, but there are many other better brands. You will also no find any great longboards from a store at the mall, and that you will find will be way overpriced for what you get.

If she really wants a Sector 9 though, I would recommend getting the Aperture or Fractal

http://shop.ccs.com/product/model:174614/sku:65-04351/sector-9-fractal-complete/blue/yellow/?cm=GLOBAL%20SEARCH%3A%20KEYWORD%20SEARCH#sku=65-04351&size=9.00

I looks on the CCS website and found that they carry the Never Summer Descent. It is actully a great deck for cruising around. Never Summer boards are made by a Colorado company that makes amazing quality boards.

The Dreg Paradox is also a good board and it is on sale.

My act of kindness, giving to a complete stranger ?

Today, I was online just surfing through some craigslist ads and came upon a ad that truly touched my heart. Mom in need of clothing for her 2 mth old daughter.
I immediately ran to my closet and looked thru clothing, purchased clothing online, called friends and asked if they had any infant clothing in good condition and I am purchasing clothing brand new from Target and Wal Mart.
I just want to help. I feel like a secret santa.

Tis the season to be jolly, but being kind and thoughtful is great.

Good to know there are still people out there who actually care about other people’s well-being. Very, very nice of you. =]

Finding Love in Cyberspace/internet Dating

Internet Dating

Dating on the Internet or finding love in Cyberspace can be exciting, inviting and instant.

We live in a society that requires and wants everything immediately, instantly! We have fast

food restaurants, drive through bank tellers, instant credit, instant potatoes, coffee, numerous other things and now instant love!

Life After Divorce and/or Death

There IS life after divorce and life after spousal death. And life after forgiving and releasing past negative memories or previous unpleasant relationships that were not working.

The Internet provides an instant manner of communication by the click of a key on a keyboard; you can be instantly connected to people all over the world, thanks to our modern technology. Internet dating is another way of meeting people. As with everything there are

pros and cons to Internet/Cyberspace love connections. It is similar to dating clubs,

organizations, dances, cruises and other ways that connect singles with other singles. The Internet is another source of meeting new and interesting people. It is also one of the tools to use to meet that special someone with which to have a long-term, happy relationship or marriage. Internet dating can be fun, exciting and scary all at the same time. There are many levels of excitement and we all react in various ways. While it is good to move out of the Sleeping Car of the Relationship Train, it is also wise to use balance and common sense.

Meeting in Person

People may have a fantastic relationship over the telephone or by email but could be sorely

disappointed when they meet in person and get to know one another. Some people may not be honest about their age, appearance, employment, intentions or marital status. It is as much taking a risk and moving out of your comfort zone as meeting people anywhere through newspaper ads, friends, acquaintances, dating services, or places of employment. It is easier to access meeting people over the Internet than by some other methods. Internet Dating provides a little different angle on meeting people. Some of us are trained to love through our eyes — by what we see, not from our hearts.

Internet Stories

One lady had a fantastic relationship by email and lengthy telephone conversations and when she met the gentleman she could not get past the fact that he was, in her opinion, grossly overweight. In his email he said he was a little big. She said their minds fell desperately in love, but their bodies did not cooperate. The relationship fizzled out. Sometimes I think about those two minds in love, floating and traveling in space. . . .

Don and Rhonda

Donald met Rhoda on the Internet Chat Line. They carried on a long distance romance. Finally

they met and have since moved in together. They found happiness through cyberspace. During the course of speaking with men and women who employed this method of meeting other singles, I was told that both sexes give misleading information about age, weight and physical appearance. Some of the pictures they send over the Internet or by snail mail were true twenty years ago. It is important to search for and demand honesty and integrity when searching for that special person.

Dan and Suzie

Dan met Suzie on the Internet. He told me Susie said she was just over thirty. After they met, she finally confessed that she was ifty-four. While she did appear youthful for her age, she was not completely honest. Dan was very disappointed because, among other things, he wanted to have children and felt it would not be possible with Suzie because of her age. Dan says he stills thinks fondly of Suzie but trust for him is not there. He is off cyberspacing again hoping to meet his special lady. I gave him an affirmation to do and I am confident he will soon call me, telling the good news about his new relationship.

Cecilia and Anthony

Cecilia met Anthony on the Internet. He was from another country. E-mails were flying back and forth and she was on Cloud Nine! He flew to Canada to meet her they liked each other and hit it off immediately. It seemed so wonderful and everything was magical. After a sixweeks’ visit he went home. When he arrived back home he sent her an e-mail saying that he had undergone a change of heart. She said the email was so business like and very different from the previous ones declaring his undying love for her. She was mystified and could not understand what went wrong. What took place on that eight-hour flight back home? He never answered any of her e-mails, notes or telephone calls. Her theory is that he got scared of his feelings of love for her, the commitment issue came up and he decided to end it. She may be right.

Julie and Steve

Julie met Steve over the Internet. They started e-mailing and this continued for at least one and a half years. They spoke to each other on the telephone daily and the telephone bills were sky high. The “I love you’s,” were thick and flying back and forth at break-neck speed. He decided to take a car trip to Seattle to meet her. She was so excited and asked me if I would accompany her. When she told me what the plan was, I was totally shocked. He wanted her to be dropped of at a Rest Area Stop and she was so enamored with Steve that she had agreed. I absolutely refused to take her there. She reluctantly agreed to go with my plan and when Steve phoned later and found out he was very angry and hostile. She told him we would be meeting him at a Mall in the Seattle area. At least, I thought, if she did not like him, I could drive her back to her vehicle. When he arrived we were both in a total state of shock. First of all he did not remotely resemble the Internet picture, and secondly he was unkempt, unshaven and very scary looking. Five minutes into the conversation he asked Julie if he could borrow $100. After Julie paid the restaurant bill, we both looked at each other in amazement. Needless to say she sent him packing. She thanked me repeatedly with tears streaming down her cheeks for insisting they meet at the Mall as I drove her back to her vehicle. It could have turned out very differently.

Helga and James

Another of my friends met her husband over the Internet and I was proud to be her Maid of Honor at her wedding. Three years later, they are still happily married.

Jackie and Harold

Jackie met her employer Harold who has been an absolute Godsend to her. He was separated at the time. They discovered that they were not compatible as lovers, but struck up a successful, thriving business. Today it is worth more than a quarter of a million dollars annually.

Matt and Theresa

Matt met Theresa over the Internet. He fell desperately in love with her. He loved her voice, her manner and personality. They had numerous telephone conversations and exchanged letters and e-mails. There was one thing that bothered Matt. She was always very evasion when he suggested that they meet in person. She always had an excuse. Finally he remembered something that was said in conversation about the place where she worked. He started piecing things together and found out where she worked. When he finally located her, he found out she was a married woman with four young children. When he confronted her on the telephone, she admitted it and said she was not ready or prepared to break up her family, but just wanted to be pursued by another man. She actually wanted to have an affair with Matt and still keep her marriage in tact. Matt is still grieving over Theresa and he is very hurt that she strung him along and was not truthful. He told me that he will be a little more careful who he gives his heart to. It was a harsh lesson, but Matt has not given up on his search for the perfect woman for him. He is also doing the affirmation I taught him and specifying that this lady is honest and truthful. He is in my prayers and affirmations.

Nadia and Steve

Nada goes cyberspace Surfing. Perhaps I was curious and maybe even lonely. After noticing an

Internet advertisement, I decided to fill out a profile and see what I might find. It was a one-month free trial. Initially I exercised some caution and excluded uploading my photo. Little did I know that the person I was about to meet online was going to influence my life in more ways than he even knows! I conversed with two males at the same time. I felt awkward doing so, however, that is the reality out there. I did notice how there is an indescribable aura, tone, mood and personality to each person, even though we were not conversing in person. I took a real liking to Steve.

He was a vice president of a company in New York, established, well educated and grounded – exactly what I needed at that time of my life. Our communication lasted about eight months. It consisted of email and telephone calls. Steve, a recovering alcoholic, helped me realize that I needed and could benefit from counselling. The reality is that I was certainly not ready in any way for any kind of relationship. He was a good listener; he knew just what to say that would help me answer my own questions. He shared with me his experience with co-dependency which plagues many people today. As a single parent, I was experiencing emotional, physical and financial challenges that affected my son’s behaviour.

I began seeking counselling for my son, which in turn commenced counselling for me. Later to discover that my son’s emotional state was merely a reflection of me. Fortunately, for approximately three years, I persisted in the process of self-discovery and have benefited enormously. Having pressure to remarry again from family and friends, I ventured again this time by placing my profile at two separate services. The profiles did not have very many details outlining each individual. One person I recall had lied about his age, claiming to be ten years younger than he was. Honesty is paramount for me and I would imagine for most people. Disappointed with the quality of some profiles, I put more of my focus back on the other company. Having gone through counselling, I was a more confident person. I had no reluctance to being open and up front by including my photos. Personally, I only fully read and viewed profiles that included photos. Looks are important; however, not the deciding factor for the success of a relationship; and I do not mean Mr Universe. I noticed my number one match was a profile that did not have a photo available. I ignored that profile for about two months. One day, I decided to read through this profile, which outlined his physical traits, personality and activities. At this point, I knew what type of men I found attractive and this individual had traits I was looking for. His photo was not available; it was ‘for friends only’. Luckily he included a return email address.

He was an attractive single father, devoted to his children, a successful businessman, educated, compassionate, witty, and as I began to know him more, noticed he was extremely talented in writing. I would confidently say that he is one of the best writers that I have ever had the privilege of reading. This began an equally profound experience for me as having attended counseling. Without faltering, I must put what I have learned into action with Lawrence. We have communicated for 11 months now, mostly via email. Though we have not yet physically met, I feel I know him well and consider him a close friend. I have immensely matured by honestly looking at my strengths and weaknesses and giving myself a fair evaluation. I have learned so much about myself from this relationship. I became conscious of what is important and is not important to me; what I want in a relationship and what I do not want. I have learned when to say enough is enough and how to regain my power when I’m feeling helpless and overwhelmed. I have spent months working on my personal childhood issues of rejection and abandonment.

Many times I would feel on the verge of nausea just before opening his email, from the debilitating fear of rejection. I have learned to exercise mind power when I am totally filled with the feeling of fear. My task was to stay calm and comfort that small wounded child within myself by saying: “I am safe and I won’t leave you”. Communicating with Lawrence has also, acquainted me with my writing capabilities as another form of personal expression. This man has influenced my life, to what capacity, only God knows at this point. Perhaps because of him, I have gained enough confidence to now to pursue writing my first book. This is a relationship I will truly reasure. Of course, like any other relationship, we have had our challenges. Challenges that others may perceive as negative have been positive experiences as they have given me tremendous clarity in seeking the right man for me. Now that is worth it! During the last couple of months, I added my profile to another service. I remember thinking, ‘why not, I have nothing to lose by having my profile out there’. From coaching, I had a clear picture of what type of man I wanted. I put my focus on what I wanted, as opposed to what I did not want. Shortly after, I received an email from a very attractive man, David, who is a successful Marketing Director, educated, grounded, well organized, honest,pro-active and loved to communicate. He was very direct and made his intentions clear from his first email.

He wanted a committed relationship and to meet with me the following month. I was very surprised and even frightened by his level of directness. This was something I was not used to, from communicating with Lawrence. David was completely different in his approach and personality. We started communicating by telephone within twenty-four hours of his first email. Our almost daily talks went on for hours; he loved planning what we would do together. This friendship abruptly ended as it hastily began. Why I attracted David into my life, I am not completely sure of at this point. One thing I am sure of is we sometimes attract what we do not want in our lives or in this case challenges that require personal growth for both of us. My coach was right, the real test for me in meeting David, was to be proud of who I am and not apologize for any aspect of me. And yes, I am a wonderful, loving person, who is deserving, exactly as I am! July 10, 2002 Nada Adams

There are numerous case histories.

It is very important to stay balanced and use your common sense. When planning to do some Internet surfing and relationship searching on the Internet also do the accompanying Master Affirmation. This is your Trigger Tool or Magic Wand to making your dreams a reality and attract that special person to you.

When planning to do some Internet surfing and relationship searching on the Internet also do

the accompanying Master Affirmation. This is your Trigger Tool or Magic Wand to make your dreams a reality and attract that special person to you now.

Expect him or her to walk right out of your affirmation!

“I, (your name), deserve and now have a lasting, loving, happy, healthy relationship with

the perfect person for me. I find him or her on the Internet and we enjoy a rewarding, fulfilled happy relationship/marriage. Divine Wisdom knows where this person is and the power of my subconscious mind brings us together in its own way. He or she is honest, trustworthy and dependable as I am honest, trustworthy and dependable. We are happy, fulfilled, and peaceful to the good of all parties concerned. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”

I fully accept

Signed: ___________________________

Dated: ___________________________

When you date and sign your Master Affirmation, you have made a firm and binding contract with your Higher Self, God, Universal Mind or whomever you believe in. Even a check is worthless unless it is dated and signed. When meeting the stranger that you have been communicating with on the Internet, meet at a public place. When in doubt, don’t do it. Listen to your small still voice (intuition) and let it be your guide. When doing affirmations of this type, it is imperative to use balance and common sense. Do not attempt to twist the affirmation to suit your own needs.

Be sure and Heed the Safety Clause

Jody told me because she did an affirmation and met a married man it was meant to be. When I

questioned her further about the affirmation content, she finally admitted to me that she

had overlooked adding the safety clause to the good of all parties concerned. She became very unhappy about the time she was spending alone, waiting for her married lover. The relationship ended in disaster and was a great learning experience for Jody. Affirmations always work but they must be properly done and to the good of all parties concerned, and this includes you!

Affirmation Rules

    * Never hurt or take from anyone

    * Your Affirmations must be created to the good of all parties concerned and this includes you.

    * There must be at least a 51% believability factor that it can manifest as affirmed.

    * Use your common sense.

    * Have fun

Don’t look at Internet dating as the only source of meeting single people. Check out dating clubs, organizations, newspapers, singles dances, ruises, church gatherings garage sales, swap meets, grocery stores (especially the produce department and be aware of those people shopping for one), and other appropriate places. Also churches, reputable dating clubs, Internet chat room, skiing, friends, relatives, your place of employment, blind dates are all places to meet other singles. Other places could be on cruises and vacations for singles. When a friend or relative fixed you up with a date, it can be both negative and positive. Positive in that the person arranging the date knows you life style and characteristics and that person isn’t an absolute stranger to you. It can be negative because now your friend or relative who arranged the date has a direct pipeline into the details of the date and any additional dates or involvement Expect your first date to be a little awkward so try to break the ice. True love is built on a bridge of communication. Talk, ask questions and then listen, listen and listen. If you are sincerely interested in pursuing a relationship, use the ten magic words, “You are so interesting; please tell me all about yourself. People are always interested in talking about their lives, problems, interests and accomplishments. The qualities you are asking for in a mate also need to be present in you. If some of them are lacking in your life, start cultivating hem today. Do not wait until the relationship is dead to realize it is finished. Do not waste time on mercy dates. Those are dates where you are wishing you were somewhere else with someone else. If the person is not interested in you, or you are not interested in them, go on to the next one. There are over six billion people on the planet and you can be sure that there is that special person just for you.

To Recap

    * Make sure that thereon you are communicating with is coming from a place of integrity.

    * Meet in a public place.

    * Check out the person before making agreements and arrangements.

    * Use your common sense.

    * Do your Master Affirmation.

    * Always tell a friend where you are meeting and when.

    * Be honest and expect honesty from him or her. If you don’t feel comfortable about something – UN-AGREE.

    * Be safe, happy and most of all — have fun!

Learning to Snowboard – The Basics Explained

You can learn the basics of snowboarding within a couple of days, but there are enough challenges, techniques, and styles to keep you interested for years.

The main snowboarding styles are alpine, freestyle and freeride. Freeride snowboarding involves riding down the face of a mountain, whilst taking in its natural bumps and curves. Freestyle focuses on tricks, such as spins, jumps and grabbing the board in mid-air. Snowboarding alpine style is not unlike skiing, as it emphasizes building up speed and making sharp turns. For those unsure of which style is best for them, starting withe freeride is advisable, as it is the easiest to pick up the basics of the sport with.

There are two different stances snowboarding stances that can be adopted. In the regular stance, which is most popular, your left foot goes first. In the goofy stance, the right foot goes in front of the left. Your instructor will show you both early on whilst showing you how to snowboard and it is totally up to you as to which one you make your primary stance.

Unlike skiers, who shift their weight from side to side, snowboarders must shift their weight between their heel and their toe. The technique is more like Surfing or skateboarding than skiing. When you shift your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. When you shift your weight backward, you will slow down. By digging your heels down, the edge of the snowboard drags in the snow and causes you to stop.

There are three different types of snowboards available: freeride, freestyle, and alpine boards. Each is manufactured uniquely in relation to size, shape and materials. The best board for you is dependent on your favored style of snowboarding, your height (when standing on end, the board should reach between your nose and chin), your shoe size and your weight.

Snowboard boots and bindings are necessary to connect yourself safely, securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The higher the quality of the ones you get, and the more they fit your personal specifications, the easier it will be to control your board.

You should dress in layers, with a three-layer system generally seen as the best: an outer later, a middle layer, and a base layer. Warmth, weight and moisture management being considered for each of those layers.

Your head and ears can be protected from extremely low temperatures with a comfortable hat or beanie and, over that, wear a snowboard helmet. Wear goggles to protect your eyes from UV rays, snow, wind, ice, and tree branches. Opt for gloves which are waterproof, durable, and have a fleece or other synthetic-based insulated lining.

You should borrow or rent clothing and equipment prior to buying any to ensure that not only do you like the sport, but that you also get items tailored towards the style of snowboarding that you will mostly be participating in. Equipment and clothing is not cheap, so making the right choices first time around is important.

Your Guide to Finding More Family Time

Whether we are working outside of the home or inside the home, it is becoming increasingly more difficult in the age of “instant communication” to take some TIME OUT for family. We have the cell phone, Blackberry, Instant Messaging, and the list goes on of ways that we can be contacted instantaneously. And in each of those moments our attention is diverted from whatever we were doing to give our attention to the “new” pressing issue.

Let’s face it; most of us take Family Time for granted. If you are working outside of the home, it is easy to let those precious few evening hours be taken up with phone calls, returning email, putting “final touches” on work related items, etc. If you are working in the home the distractions are similar; phone calls, volunteerism, housework, etc. The point is that working parents (both inside & outside the home) are letting outside influences take precedence over Family Time. Would we let having to stay an additional hour at work in order to send the CEO the sales figures for the 1st quarter have priority over our child’s ballet recital? Would we allow getting the last load of clothes laundered take precedence over singing “The Wheels on the Bus” (for the 100th time) with your toddler? Each of these things is important and depending upon our value system at the time any of these activities may or may not make it to your priority list. If you “schedule” the time, you may be able to get more “Family Time” than you thought.

Here are a few tips to finding more Family Time:

SCHEDULE IT! – Almost everyone has some system of remembering all the things that need to be done at work/home. Whether it is a Day-Timer, a Blackberry, a refrigerator calendar you have a way to keep track of the myriad of activities in your family. Family Time is a priority that you want to find time for so schedule it. In our home, Friday night from 6:30pm until the kids’ bedtime is Family Time. We all have to do an activity together. Each child gets a chance to choose what he/she would like to do for our Family Night and EVERYONE has to do it. This is a great way to get everyone together and you can find times in the midst of your time together to get to know what is happening in your child’s world in a relaxed setting. Some of the favorite activities at our house; the arcade, bowling, Scrabble tournaments, Uno, music concerts, and movies.

COMMIT TO IT! – It is easy to let phone calls, email, net Surfing, etc. to take your attention away. Don’t let it! Turn the cell phone off, turn the computer off, turn the Blackberry off and truly give all of your attention to your family for your designated Family Time. Don’t let anything intrude on your time and your kids will see how much Family Time matters to you, how much they matter to you.

ENJOY IT! – If you are not accustomed to scheduling a block of Family Time, the prospect of spending a block of unstructured time could seem a little daunting. In order to ease into a comfortable time with your family, you might first want to schedule “activities” that take you out of the house. With activities, there is an opportunity to bond during the activity, but if there is a lull in communication it will be OK because you can focus on the activity.

David McCready: Entrepreneur and Extreme Downhill Longboard Skateboarder

David McCready Downhill Long-Board Skateboarder. An extreme sport viewed by many as insane, but to a select few its a soothing rush of adrenaline. A longboard is a skateboard with a longer and sometimes wider shape used for longboarding. They are most commonly used for cruising, downhill racing, slalom racing, or transportation. Longboards can be shaped in many different ways, depending on the type of riding intended. Their greater weight and bulk make them less suitable for many skateboarding tricks, but contributes to a fluid motion by providing more momentum. Longboarding is often compared to surfing on concrete, and the design allows big turns or quick short carves similar to a surfboard. Longboarding became popular alongside emerging surfing culture through the mid 1950s. Longboarding may have originated in California where the streets gave ground to many longboarders due to the rolling hills but some believe it is a product of Hawaiian origin. Although its origin is unknown, longboarding was first created as a land alternate for surfers.Longboard equipment is very similar to skateboard equipment. Many longboarders wear gloves and a helmet. Wrist, elbow, and knee protection are always recommended. Also in the sliding and downhill disciplines, riders wear “slide gloves” which are a specialized glove made out of a strong material such as leather, and have “pucks” attached, which are usually made of delrin, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (often shortened to UHMW), or corian. Polyethylene cutting boards are also sometimes cut into pucks and used, but it is not recommended as they are less resistant to heat and will sometimes melt when used on rough pavement.

Most longboards measure between 90 and 150 cm (35.4-60 inches). Shorter boards may still be referred to as longboards when their main purpose is in line with that of longboarding (i.e. downhill & cruising). There are several different shapes of longboards including but not limited to: pintails, flat nose riders, and boards shaped like a longer shortboard. Pintails permit looser trucks and larger diameter wheels better suited for carving or a “surfy” feel. Mid-length boards, 94-127 cm (37-50 inches) are the most versatile.

David McCready is known by locals to be the best longboard rider around but David is very humble and stated that he is nowhere near the best. He lives in California and spends his weekends driving all over the state searching for the next best hills to ride. The fastest he has ever personally been clocked on a longboard was 60mph in Californias High country.

About the Author

What kind of longboard should I get?

I want to learn how to longboard. I would probably use the longboard to commute around the neighborhood, roll around the streets, or just go up and down the alley.
I’ve never skateboarded, or surfed, or anything like that. I’m a total beginner. I can’t find a longboarding shop near my house, but I can answer that on my own. I went to an online longboarding shop, and there were all these names of decks, wheels, bearings, trucks… And I have no idea what the difference is.
Anyone wanna help this beginner out?
I will be going to Sports Authority to get a longboard. By “what kind of longboard”, I mean if I should get a pintail, or what? I am a beginner, and I want to use it for transportation, and just rolling around, no racing or anything…

NOOO!!! Don’t go to SPORT AUTHORITY! They can’t tell you anything! haha. Go to a local skate shop. Since you can’t find any on your own then search on Google ” Skate shops near (Your Town), (Your State)”, It’ll show you one a map of shops near you. They are all experts there. Here are 2 different brands i trust:

(the websites if you can’t find a shop near you, you can just order it off line)
Sector 9: www.sector9.com
Original Skateboards: http://www.originalskateboards.com/

Get a board under 36in. for it is easier to pump and turn since your using it for transportation.

Feel free to email me for any further help: gabrielle_gunther@yahoo.com

Hope this helps
Gabby

(PS what ever you do, never buy a bike, skateboard or longboard from any chain stores like Sport Authority, kmart, etc. Always buy from a local shop like a Skate and surf shop :])

Prepare Yourself for the Surf

Some people think that Surfing is a glamour lifestyle that will allow a surfer to be exposed to members of the opposite sex on a daily basis. Since most women think that surfers are very alluring, most surfers will tend to get very prepared to surf because one wrong move could make them unattractive to women who sit in the sand and watch them perform tricks all day.

Most surfers put a lot of thought into the type of surfboard that they will use. The length of the board should fit the length of their bodies and any other size will not work right or look right when the surfer is under scrutiny by spectators on the shore. Most surfers will learn about surfboards from friends, and some surf shop owners will share interesting surfing anecdotes with them if business is slow.

After a short time in the water, a surfer should become very comfortable with using surfing terms around friends such as the type of surfboard they plan to purchase after the art of surfing has been engrained in their memory. Surfers enjoy having choices and using a longboard or a shortboard is one of the personal choices in surfing that a person can make. he other choices that a surfer can make will be in the stylish gear that they wear while surfing and those choices will no doubt be very colorful ones that are based on comfort.

Some surfers do not care if they are thoroughly prepared for the sport because they are solely interested in making their way to the water to surf. They will often try to find the cheapest surfboard and realize after they are in the water that the board is not suitable for surfing anymore. Perhaps it is because the surfboard has been damaged in some way while surfing and is showing signs that it retains water. If they had done some research through the internet, they could have learned to recognize the warning signs for a surfboard that should not be used anymore.

Some surfboards are unfit for use in the water simply because a previous owner has not cared for the surfboard properly. One of the important factors that every surfer learns is that a surfboard needs to be waxed on a regular basis. This preparation technique is necessary because wax allows the surfer to grip the surfboard with the soles of their feet. By using the proper preparations, the surfer will be assured of maintaining a good grip on the board at all times.

As the surfer prepares to enter the water for the first time with their surfboard, they will be very conscious of what other surfers do. New surfers will spend many hours in the water learning to sit and stand on the board. After they have perfected these techniques, they will be ready to try out some waves and they will be less worried about the stares that they are getting from the crowd that has formed on the beach.

Tips and advice for a wannabe surfer?

im determined to learn to surf this summer!
i live in ocean city md.
i have surfed twice before, once here and once in the OBX. it wasnt pretty.
i used a foam board and a crappy long board.
im female, 5′9, pretty sure i wanna stick with the longboard. what size would i need?
how much should i spend on my first board, where should i look for one?
any tips tricks advice etc is appreciated!! i dont wanna go to a random shop and pay for lessons if i can avoid it.
i used to skate, i thought that would help but it really hasnt.
oh and m bioggest challenge is getting up on the board…my legs always seem to get tangled and standin up is tough!
please help!

i also live here in Ocean city maryland, so i can relate to you. there are few surf shops that are good, but endless summer surf shop on like 54th street is the best. ask for Salty. he will spend his whole day answering your questions and do everything to make sure you are on the right board, definetly stick with a longboard, but i would suggest taking a lesson with them first. they are amazing. they put you on a roam board, which makes it so much easier to stand up. and they are not that expensive. and if you buy the wrong board, Salty will let you trade it in until you find the board that you absolutely love.

The Longboards deliver a feast of solid Surf instrumentals, recorded on vintage equipment to recreate the atmosphere of the original Surf era.
Surfing – Before You Get Started Surfing

Surfing is a physical activity and classrooms are for bookworms. But spend some time getting a few clues. That will prevent you from being sorry you chose to surf.

Before you even get a surfboard, you need to understand your own strengths and weaknesses. If you can’t swim well, you don’t belong in the water. Even the best surfers in the world fall off their boards, sometimes on purpose. That leaves you in the water without a ride back to the beach.

To build up that strength there are a number of useful exercises. You can do push-ups or bench presses, which will help enhance upper body strength. You’ll need that in order to whip up your body from a lying to a standing position, called a ‘pop-up’. You can do squats or leg presses to get your thighs and calves ready for the rigors of standing on a board with good balance. Overall, you should have a lot of endurance. Run. Swim.

Get familiar with the board. It looks simple enough but it has many attributes. A longboard is roughly 9 feet (2.7m) long and not quite 2 feet (60cm) wide. It will usually have one or more fins and have a stripe down the middle. Many will have a leash near the tail that you connect to your ankle.

There are pros and cons to using the strap. It will keep your surfboard from floating away when you fall off. But it can get tangled in coral and drag you down. Get comfortable with it on the beach or in a swimming pool.

On the beach, make a narrow groove in the sand and lay the board down, putting the fin in the groove. That way you can practice standing up from a sitting/paddling position to a standing position. Practice jumping up from a lying to a standing position. Push up with your hands on each side of the board and whip your feet underneath your body. Assume the traditional crouch you’ve seen other surfers do when they ride a wave. Do it again and again.

You’ll need to know how and where to stand. Face the front of the board and keep your feet along each side of the stringer (the center line). Hold off on anything fancy like hanging five until you have a lot more experience. Note the position where you are balanced on the board. That’s best done in a swimming pool to better simulate real conditions.

On the day, make sure you surf with an experienced surf buddy. Someone should show you first-hand how to paddle, stand, catch a wave and other needed skills. They can also save your life if you get in over your head, which is easy for beginners to do.

That same expert will help you judge which waves are worth catching and give you guidance about etiquette. They’ll show you how to move away from a surfer who has priority because they are closer to the break than you.

Be mentally and physically prepared, make sure you are well protected again the sun UV radiation by wearing sun protection swimwear, and you’ll enjoy your surfing experience. None better than that, needless to say.

The Future of Skateboarding

Where have we been, where are we now and where is skateboarding going ?

The Beginning

If we’re going to try to figure out the future, it’s probably a good idea to head back first and see how this thing started.

It all began in the fifties, when Californian surfers started attaching roller skate wheels to planks of wood and riding down their local streets. Skateboard manufacturers started springing up in the early sixties and a new lifestyle was born.

Urethane skateboard wheels were invented in 1972 and are still used today. The mid 70s saw the first skateboard parks begin to appear which naturally spawned new styles of riding, new tricks and new boards as skaters went vertical. Also in the mid 70s, a new competitive scene was born when a slalom and freestyle contest was held at the Ocean Festival in Del Mar, California .The famous Zephyr team turned the skateboarding world on its head with their new aggressive approach to freestyle skating. In 1978 the most famous skate trick of all, the “Ollie”, was invented by Alan Gelfand (the 70s were a big decade for skating).

The 80s were a comparatively slow decade for skateboarding although there was a boost that came with the popularity of the VCR when the first skateboard videos were introduced. The Bones Brigade Video Show was particularly popular and made Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Stacy Peralta, and Kevin Staab household names amongst the skating fraternity.

The first Extreme Games were held in Rhode Island in 1995 and the skateboarding competition received a lot of attention leading to increased interest in the sport and raised its profile in the broader community. Skateboarding was also part of the first Winter X games in ’97 and competitive skateboarding had truly become mainstream.

The biggest thing to hit skateboarding in the 2000s is the massive popularity of the video game console. Skateboarding games lend themselves well to the format and there have been smash hit video games every year in the 2000s. A new generation of skaters was born as kids traded their console controllers for the real thing.

The Future of Skateboarding

Competitive skateboarding will be established as a legitimate mainstream sport in much the same way as surfing and surf culture. Just a few decades ago, surfers were looked down upon as untrustworthy reprobates. These days parent don’t think twice about wandering into the surf stores that exist in every shopping mall and loading up on clothes with surf labels for their offspring, who mightn’t even know what a beach looks like. Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Rip Curl, Quiksilver and Billabong are all trusted global brands now. Like it or not, watch for skating to go the same way. We’ll see mindblowing tricks leveraging energy and athleticism that would seem unimaginable today. Skate heroes will go mainstream and expect to see a much more advanced global competitive scene. Once again it’s instructive to take a look at surfing’s path. The competitive surfing scene floundered for decades before getting its act together in the late 80s, when the brave step was taken to give ultimate control of the sport to a single governing body. A new man-on-man format was introduced and contests were taken to the best waves at the best time of the year. The overall good of the sport finally overcame parochialism and commercial interest and poor, uncompetitive contests were discarded. Now, surfing has hit the big time – it has sophisticated, multi-tiered competitive scene with massive media coverage. Can skating go the same way ? Yes, if it allows itself to.

When it comes to local ramps and skate parks, expect bigger walls, bigger bowls and more of them. As the current generation of skaters grows up and gets its turn to have a say in council spending and infrastructure, well it’s good news for skaters who like parks and ramps.

Technology will impact skateboards in the same way that it’s hitting so many other products. Stronger, lighter materials will appear and the rapid distribution of information means that board and truck design will advance even faster. The impact of the internet is both a challenge and an opportunity for the local skateboard shop. Ecommerce growth rates are huge and more people are keen to buy skateboards online. The web allows a distribution model that effectively puts the consumer closer to the skateboard warehouse. If you long for the old days of the 70s wooden plank, then this mightn’t do much for you but if you’re kid on a limited budget, it’s all good news. Expect better, more technically advanced products at lower prices.

If skateboarding follows the same lines as other markets, then we might see further consolidation amongst the big brands, similar to Billabong’s acquisition of Sector 9. Other big players in today’s skateboard market are brands like Birdhouse, Girl, Zero, Plan B, Element and Blind. There’s a fair chance we could see a large company buy up a stable of big skate brands to get the pricing benefit that comes with volume, which can obviously help with product pricing but doesn’t always result in original product design and creativity (when was the last time Ford or GM came out with a cool product ?). In any market, if the big get bigger, then opportunities arise for small players to carve out their own niche for local markets and buyers who are less brand conscious.

Maple is still the premium construction material for decks but surely the day is approaching when maple will be superceded, at least for some styles of board. New styles of boards will continue to emerge – the humble skateboard of the early days has already evolved into longboards, cruisers, retro boards, pool boards, old school and mountain boards. As well as lighter, stronger trucks and better quality wheels, there’ll be new deck plan shapes and original artwork.

So there you have it, a quick look at the past and a peek into the future – and the future looks good !
