The Addiction To California Surfing

Surfing is a surface water sport in where the individual is carried by a breaking wave while riding on a surfboard. There are various types of surfing, based on the different methods or surf craft used to ride the wave. The more commonly practised types would include regular stand-up surfing, kneeboarding and bodyboarding.

Many people are addicted to surfing in California today. The clean beaches, perfect waves and good weather were always an attraction to anyone who has ever surfed in his life. When you grow near a place like the Pacific Ocean, it becomes a part of you; it is like a religion almost.

Tell me just one person who lives here and never sneak out of classes to go surfing. It is always an adventure for younger: they pack some food and water, the wetsuits and their boards and that would be enough for having a great day on the beach. Sometimes, when the waves are too high and the ocean is agitated, they still have the courage to get on their boards; it fills them with adrenaline.

Choosing the beach is not something that you decide on the spot, it depends on the waves. The places with the best waves are always crowded with surfers, and if you find a secluded place, the waves are not good or sharks might be there. The best places to surf in California are Santa Cruz or the Southern California area. However, if you never surfed before, try other beaches too, you might find one that you like better.

When you will find the right beach for you might find yourself surrounded by strange groups of people, which seem to be tied to California surfing- the surfers. Sometimes they are friendly, sometimes aggressive, it depends on what way do you choose or if you know something about surfing. There are unspoken laws that you would better find about before you try mingle among these ocean creatures. If you will not take ones wave and leave enough space for the others it will be OK. If not, the worst thing it could happen is they surfing over your head and leaves you to sharks.

California surfing is a thing that once gets you; you will never get rid of again. Just check one of California surfing competitions; the true surfers are there, the best in the world. It is a spiritual experience related to the deep ocean and the adrenaline pumping through your veins.

Five Terrific Values When Traveling to Oahu

The Hawaiian Islands are recognized for their natural splendor, wonderful climate, and friendly people. It is also known as a really expensive place to reach and exist in. But in this article I will illustrate five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, and these are not mindless things to do like lying around the seaside (which you can do anyplace there is a beach and nice climate), but activities that you can do only on Oahu.

1. The first of the terrific values when traveling to Oahu will be the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. This is at no cost, and free tickets for the program are offered on a first come, first- served basis. It is really a serious and sobering experience, as you are actually standing over a grave site where 1177 men lost their lives. The addition in 1999 of the Battleship Missouri, the vessel where the formal signing of the “Instrument of Surrender” on September 2, 1945 ended the Second World War, is really a fitting bookend to the US involvement in the conflict. Over a million and one half visitors each year tour the site, so it is strongly recommended you get there early to beat the excursion buses.

2. A drive to Oahu’s North Shore, known as the surfing capital of the world, will simply amount to the cost of a rental car. All of the beaches in Hawaii are open, so it is possible for you to visit the home to the very best world-class surfers inhabit. Make sure to stop at the Banzai Pipeline, where surfers make their way through the center of the wave. This is an easy hour’s drive from Waikiki, and an area that far too many tourists neglect to see.

3. Another cheap opportunity is a trek up to the top of Diamond Head. Positioned at the Southeast coast of Oahu and overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki Beach, this $5 per car ($1 for pedestrians) experience may be done in two hours, and is approximately 1.4 miles in length. The path is cemented most of the way, and as I remember the top got quite steep. But the top presents a spectacular 365 degree view of Oahu and is a must-see for photography enthusiasts.

4. The Dole Plantation is a renovated, operational pineapple plantation that is devoted to the perpetuation of the Hawaiian agricultural heritage. This costs $8 for adults, $6 for children, and the tour takes guests from the point in time the Dole enterprise was a two-horse ranch to the most important producer and marketer of pineapples in the world. It also features a two acre, 1.7 miles of paths maze, recognized inside the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest maze around the world.

5. The last among the five terrific values when traveling to Oahu would be to top off the day with a two hour Waikiki evening dinner cruise. There are several to choose from, but can be purchased for as little as $125 per person. These let you get beautiful views of Waikiki and Diamond Head, along with a one hour picturesque ride up Mount Tantalus to view Honolulu by nighttime for a $22 ad on.

Now that you have five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, you should have an affordable solution to get around. The Bus will allow you to travel to all or any the favorite buying and beach areas, and they are available frequently. It is a good service for tourists who do not have autos to get about – it makes getting to places outside the immediate Waikiki district rather accessible. So enjoy your trip in Hawaii, and know that you won’t have to spend a fortune.

Surfing Vacations for the Experienced Surfer

Going on surf trips has long been one of my interests and I have gone on a lot of surf excursions to incredible places. I have gone on considerable travel over and above surf travel, but the surf vacation has always been my preferred method to observe the world. Why is this? On a surf vacation, you typically end up at some incredible place. Generally this amazing place you wind up in is someplace most only see in postcards of some wonderful isle paradise. Also, surfing a few hours in the early morning and afternoon leaves you a great deal of time for relaxation and to go out and see the sites and meet the local people.

Many beginner surfers will take their initial surf vacation with the intention of learning to surf by finding a surf camp. A simple search online will show numerous surf camps around the world. There are a lot of surf camps in destinations like Costa Rica, Mexico, and Europe that concentrate on educating people how to surf. These surf camps are often about a week and are staffed with competent surf instructors. When you leave, you will be catching waves on your own. Not a bad way of spending a getaway. Other surf camps are aimed at advanced surfers and offer guiding to surf spots only known by residents. A few of these surf camps are setup to cater to female surfers too with week long female only sessions.

A few of the most popular places to visit for a surf vacation are the Hawaiian Islands, Costa Rica, and Indonesia. I resided in Maui, Hawaii and think it is an excellent destination in the summertime months with its countless southerly facing waves in addition to Hookipa in the winter. Any of the South American places will also get excellent summer time waves and if you speak Spanish, it is easy to meet people and learn about the cultures. If you don’t speak Spanish, it is a sensible way to study the language. Take a handful of Spanish lessons in the afternoons in between surf sessions. Of course, places in Indonesia like the Telos or Mentawai islands provide the exotic surf vacation and waves that are as good as it gets for the advanced surfer. In winter months, the obvious and greatest place to check out is the North Shore of Oahu with huge, excellent surf and an excellent surf lifestyle.

I attempt to leave the country to surf at least several times a year on a surf vacation. It usually is good to see exciting destinations and encounter new nationalities. It is also wonderful to get back to my favorite surf spots away from California.

About the Author

Through surf travel, I have seen quite a few far off and spectacular locations. Going to a surf camp to learn to surf is also a great vacation and something many individuals will recall as their most loved vacation for years to come. For the advanced surfer, Mentawais surf may be the journey of your life.

How long does it take to learn how to surf?

My family and I are going to Maui for spring break & I’m looking into Surf Lessons. They’re per hour and I want to know how many hours it will take to learn. I’m not trying to go pro… I just want to learn the basics and know how to do it.

A lot longer than you will be there.

How East Coast Surf Became Popular

Have you been invited to an East Coast Surf? Surfers worldwide would travel and go the distance just to find that perfect wave that they can ride. Being on top or within those barrel-like, humongous waves is quite a different feeling. Being keen in surfing, you should know that surfing is more than just a sport but has a lot of factors to consider if you aim to have the best surfing experience ever. One of them is to select the right spot. With so many coastlines in the world, one can only wander but not wander enough. Each surfer can have a turf of his own but some of them stand out completely from the rest. Perhaps it is because of the crowd or the local vibe or it can be because of the fast changing of the weather or simply the capacity of the place to produce huge waves that make it more popular than others.

So what makes East Coast surf very much liked by many people? It can be claimed that there are a lot of prime spots that are a short distance from Boston in New England’s North Shore so even if you can’t find those giant tube waves that are often seen in Hawaii, you can still enjoy the ankle to chest-high rolling waves that are perfect for surfing. The North Jetty is considered the most popular since surfers only have to paddle shortly for them to find the best waves in the East Coast. Monster Hole, in the south of the inlet about 3/4 miles off the beach is where there are head high swells that give longboarders a good ride but it takes a good paddle before you end up in the breaking waters that’s why only locals can do the paddle. Heading towards Massachusetts, surfers would often find the longest surfable coastline without the crowd wherein beginners won’t have blending in concerns. With the rise of the surfing population through the years, a wide array of beach breaks, reefs and also points are now discovered and developed to provide good venues for the sport. Also called “Eastern Seaboard,” the East Coast offers many discoveries as it stretches from the Atlantic Ocean down towards Canada. All these beaches here offer consistent East Coast surf the entire year, providing surfers more time and chance to try their feet on their surfboards.

Surfing as a lifestyle and out of the patronage from surfers and surfing aficionados alike presents itself as a great venture that you will love more and more each day. So be among the many who have had the natural high from surfing. Try East Coast surf and find out why it has become so popular.

Surfing in Baja California Mexico!

Tired of the crowed surfing spots in San Diego? A short drive to Baja, Mexico may be the answer to your surfing woes. Just make sure that if you do intend to drive to Mexico that you get insured first to ensure that you have a worry free drive.

Before deciding on Baja area is most ideal for surfing, Mexican auto insurance should be purchased. In order to drive around, the laws in Mexico require foreign vehicles to have Mexican Car Insurance or the resources to pay damages instantly. Whether you want to cruise along or just ride on the surf circuit, you need Mexico Car Insurance protection. Look online for quality providers such as Mexican Insurance Store.com. Its not that expensive and good quality Mexican insurance can keep you out of jail.

Baja is the most northwestern state of Mexico. Just south of the border of the US state of California, it is still located on the California peninsula. On the east, it is bordered by the Gulf of California and on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the West as well as on the South. The weather in Baja is pleasant most times of the year, so chilling out with a beer in the shore is perfect to end your day with the waves.

When surfing in Baja during the months of October to April, the water can range from fifty to sixty degrees so using a body suit is probably a good idea. Summer temperatures can range from sixty to seventy degrees. There are many surfing spots in Baja, any of which can satisfy surfers of all skill levels. Here are some of them.

Surfing in Baja California Mexico!

Baja Malibu

This beach is not for beginners but will satisfy those who are looking for great rides through the tube. Just fifteen miles south of the border, the waves are best during medium to low tides and are present during the summer and winter.

San Miguel

San Miguel offers one of the best places for waves in Baja. About sixty-one miles from the border, the turn off to San Miguel is immediately before Ensenada. For a few dollars you can pitch a tent on the beach. There are facilities too for an RV which you can hook up for a fee. Showers, bars and restaurants are also available nearby.

Isla NatividadIsla

Natividad is not that easy to get to but offers one of the best surf spots in the world. It is only accessible by boat or plane. Because of its location, it is not crowded. There is also nothing else to do on Isla Natividad, so if the waves are not present don’t bother going. Waves are usually best during the summer and fall.

what was the stereotypical style of the 90s?

i know these:

50s-everyone wore grandparent looking clothes and Surfing, guys whore sweater vests and dressed like old guys…gals wore those big wide dresses..wavy hair

60s-hippies wtith the beads and the round glasses and tied bandanas, brown cowboy vests colorful stuff, long straight hair, taking drugs..

70s-disco clothes like those white tuxedos and those short dresses and afros…with big medallions

80s-rockers with skinny jeans mostly acid washed, big hair, leather jackets, colorful jackets and clothes, the headband thing, leggings

90s??? i don’t know, only thing i can think of is those golfer hats worn backwards…

The 90’s was grunge and highly overexaggerated clothing with insane amounts of sparkle, neon, and shine.

A Little In The Early History Of Surfing

Surfing does, has done, and continues to, have a grip on the world. Those who start it rarely quit. Where did this unusual sport originate? What challenges did it face to become the sport it is? Read on for a little of the history behind surfing.

First records of surfing.

Lieutenant King who went along with the more famous Captain Cook on his voyage of exploration, recorded the natives of Hawaii doing ‘he’e nalu’ (Hawaiian for surfing, meaning literally, wave sliding) in 1779 A.D. This was the first time the sport had ever been recorded in writing by a westerner. He’s recorded as saying  in Captain Cooks  journal (King finished off Cooks journal after he as killed);

“”The Men sometimes 20 or 30 go without the swell of the surf, and lay themselves flat upon an oval piece of plan about their size and breadth, they keep their legs close on top of it, and their arms are used to guide the plank, they wait at the time of the greatest swell that sets on shore, and altogether push forward with their arms to keep on its top, it sends them in with a most astonishing Velocity”

Although Lieutenant King, ‘discovered’ surfing for the western world around 330 years ago, scientists have other evidence from western Polynesia such as cave drawings and tribal stories, that suggest surfing, in one form or another, has been ongoing for around 3000 years!

Importance of surfing to the natives

Hawaiians loved to surf. Their chiefs, showed their prowess by showing off their surfing skills. Surfboards were prized items. Practically everybody on the island, knew how to surf.

While he recorded the feats of the people on Hawaii, Lieutenant King didn’t fully understand the significance of surfing to the natives. It was an integral part of their caste based system of ruling. Tribe leaders had their own private beaches to use to enjoy the waves. Lower level people were generally forbidden to use these beaches. An exception might be granted if they were seen to exhibit particular skill in the sport. If, a commoner was, allowed to use the leaders beach it was considered a great honour.

Legendary stories recorded in songs and chants, abound from both commoner and king, of lives risked and of heroic actions all while in the surf. However in the wake of Captain Cooks voyage, things were to change.

Surfing gets forced out

After Cooks voyage, the Hawaiian islands became the place of choice for all seafarers, captains, adventurers and the like to visit. This influx of people and cultures changed Hawaiian life quickly. For example within 50 years of Cooks visit, Liholiho, the son and successor of Kamehameha I (Chief of the island at the time), swayed by the culture of the Europeans, sat down with his mother and other high chiefesses to eat dinner as equals. Since anybody could remember, men eating with woman was strictly ‘not done’.

This single act signalled the end for the system of laws, Kapu, that the islanders had followed since the beginning of time.

With Kapu done, all the cultural and ritual ties that were associated with that and surfing went. Commoners and heiresses could mix without the commoners worrying that they might come to an un-timely death. Beaches were no longer segregated to different social classes. All traditional life had went the way of the dodo and the islanders lives, with no set structure, went into chaos. Enter the Christian missionaries.

In 1820 the missionaries arrived and began converting the islanders from Polytheism to Christianity. Within ten years the islanders were all about the strict moral codes associated with the way of the cloth, rather than their normal, laid back, island life.

Once converted the missionaries had the islanders focusing more on reading, writing, working and wearing clothes than playing or surfing. In fact surfing was actively discouraged as it was seen to be against Gods rules. The future did not look good.

The only thing going out faster than surfing was the Hawaiians themselves. The ‘foreigners’ had brought disease with them that the islanders had no immunity from. From a spritely population of around 800,000 when Cook arrived in 1779 it dwindled to around 40,000 by 1896, a loss of 95% in only 117 years.

The revival

Despite all the missionaries efforts to the contrary, surfing was never totally dismissed from the island. At the turn of the 20th century, a few die hards remained surfing at Kalehuawehe on the south shore of Oahu. There are photos of solitary surfers on the beach from this time where once in the past there had been hundreds.

The revival of surfing from the brink of extinction was brought about strangely enough from the same race of people that sought to rid the island of it in the first place.

Jack London who was a popular writer of the time visited the island and was introduced to Alexander Ford. Ford, in turn, introduced him to celebrated beach boy George Freeth and from them, London was introduced to surfing.

So impressed was London, that he wrote a book, A Royal Sport: Surfing in Waikiki. Needless to say this book did well. So well in fact that one of it’s stars George Freeth was invited to show Californians, how to surf. That too was another success for surfing.

Over the next few years these champions of the sport would breathe the necessary life, back into it. London wrote about it and Freeth showcased it to the world. Ford went about campaigning for the sport, founding the ‘Outrigger canoe club’ on Waikiki beach, which focused much on promoting the sport overseas. The fourth saviour was the final thing needed to bring it permanently to the world stage.

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku

Duke, was a native Hawaiian and a lover of surfing and all things water. Blessed with huge hands and feet, Duke took part in the 1912 and 1916 Olympics, winning Gold in the 100 meter freestyle each time. He was generally considered the fastest man in water.

In 1915 he was invited to Australia to perform in New South Wales. Pretty soon after this visit, the whole country fell in love with the sport, putting Oz on track to be a surfing Mecca.

The world knew about surfing largely from the efforts of London, Freeth and Ford. Now that such a popular figure was doing it, everybody wanted to try it.

Conclusion

Surfing was enjoyed by a few for thousands of years. Under influential pressure from Europe and the missionaries, it was nearly lost for good, but never quite vanished. Thanks largely to the efforts of four men, it would return to the world and reach unimaginable heights.

Happy Surfing.
