Jet Set Life Reviews the Fasano in Rio de Janeiro

When speaking to the über-chic guests at the roof top pool of the Fasano Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, your conversation always turns to where you stayed B.F. (Before Fasano). You will get a variety of answers, yet everyone agrees that with the Fasano, Rio de Janeiro finally has a star on the hotel scene.

There was a lot of hype about the Fasano hotel opening in Rio. So, my husband and I decided to stay at this Ipanema property for ten-days during our second trip to Rio for New Year’s Eve.

When we pulled up to the perfectly located Fasano, it was rather unassuming. Once inside we found a beautifully designed lobby pulling us in three directions. To the right is the check-in and elevators, to the left are the plush couches of the lobby lounge and straight head, we can follow the narrow white curtain enclosed, lit pathway to Londra, one of Rio’s sexiest bars. One thing we do notice is a lack of music in the lobby. No faint sexy beats of any kind can be heard, just guests chattering in multiple languages. This is something that we will determine is a consistent, yet easily correctable flaw in many areas of the hotel.

It comes as no surprise to us that the master of boutique hotel interior design, Philippe Starck’s fingerprints are all over the Fasano. However, knowing Starcks previous designs like the Delano, we get the feeling that Rogério Fasano may have held Starck back a little to preserve the Fasano’s classic look.

Check-in was a breeze. The English speaking staff is polite, accommodating and an obvious example of General Manager, Fabio Prado’s extraordinary management style. At check-in were handed a sexy little black book which holds a map, note pad and the Fasano Black Card. The Black Card is our room key, yet we found out, it also open doors all around the city.

Once in the elevator, which we needed a room key to operate, we selected our floor. We stepped out of the elevator into a Philippe Starck wonderland of dark wood, dimly lit hall with an almost triangular shape. We noticed that the room numbers are not on the doors; they are illuminated on the floor in front of them, which is undeniably creative. We found an oddly shaped, striped chair in the center of the floor, which after a few Caipirinhas, we later discussed what we believe it was shaped to resemble.

Once we crossed the threshold of the ocean view room, we found an open area where our attention was immediately directed to the unobstructed view of Ipanema beach. We realized that regardless if we were in the shower, in bed or on the balcony, we always had a view of the surf and sand.

Note: When staying at the Fasano, room selection is very important. There are 82 basic rooms with a courtyard or ocean view. There are also 7 suites and 3 deluxe suites, all with beautiful panoramic ocean views. Our suggestion is to only go with an ocean view room in the category of your choice, but make sure it is on a higher floor, so the noise of the street does not bother your beauty sleep. The courtyard views are really views of the very close neighboring buildings so you are looking at wall.

Glancing beside our bed we found a complementary pair of Brazilian Havaianas flip-flops in our size. We slide them on and headed to the roof top pool. Lounge chairs to allow guests to soak in the sun surround the pool. Also, there is a covered lounge with tables where guest can enjoy a nice lunch. As we dine on the crowd favorite, tuna-tartar, we found ourselves gazing at Ipanema and Leblon beaches, and on a clear day, Christ the Redeemer. The pool manager Mario was always smiling and he and his staff are ready to assist. The only thing this rooftop is craving is music. With no music, there is no vibe so consequently, no real scene. Also on the rooftop you will find a small, yet adequate gym with windows that face the pool. Having to watch the hard bodies sweat will always make you feel guilty that you did not join them before getting into the pool.

On the first floor you will find the spa. They offer the usual spa services. However, the spa seemed to be an afterthought of the hotel group. The spa is actually found in room 112. There is no sign that says Spa, it is a normal hotel room converted into a spa. There is only one spa service that can be performed at a time because there is usually only one therapist on duty. The services themselves are good, but not as outstanding as they should be. I’d suggest opening the side courtyard on the ground floor into a magnificent spa, seeing as the space seems unused by hotel guests anyway.

There are two restaurants associated with the Fasano. Al Mare is a bright, all white restaurant on the property. They serve up classic favorites like ravioli as well as the freshest seafood in Rio. They also have a wonderful selection of wines and cocktails. Guests of the Fasano can take a complimentary hotel car to the off site restaurant Gero, named after the man himself Rogério Fasano. This darker, Italian inspired restaurant should not be missed.

Londra is an intimate dark and richly decorated bar that draws global celebrities and the beautiful people of Rio de Janeiro. A great perk of staying at the Fasano is that guests are granted immediate access to the hottest bar in Rio, Londra. If there is a wait, and there usually is, all you need to do is walk up to the front and show your Fasano Black Card.

The Fasano Hotel in Rio de Janeiro is by far my favorite hotel in Rio de Janeiro and with a couple tweaks, it couple be one of my favorites in the world.

The Addiction To California Surfing

Surfing is a surface water sport in where the individual is carried by a breaking wave while riding on a surfboard. There are various types of surfing, based on the different methods or surf craft used to ride the wave. The more commonly practised types would include regular stand-up surfing, kneeboarding and bodyboarding.

Many people are addicted to surfing in California today. The clean beaches, perfect waves and good weather were always an attraction to anyone who has ever surfed in his life. When you grow near a place like the Pacific Ocean, it becomes a part of you; it is like a religion almost.

Tell me just one person who lives here and never sneak out of classes to go surfing. It is always an adventure for younger: they pack some food and water, the wetsuits and their boards and that would be enough for having a great day on the beach. Sometimes, when the waves are too high and the ocean is agitated, they still have the courage to get on their boards; it fills them with adrenaline.

Choosing the beach is not something that you decide on the spot, it depends on the waves. The places with the best waves are always crowded with surfers, and if you find a secluded place, the waves are not good or sharks might be there. The best places to surf in California are Santa Cruz or the Southern California area. However, if you never surfed before, try other beaches too, you might find one that you like better.

When you will find the right beach for you might find yourself surrounded by strange groups of people, which seem to be tied to California surfing- the surfers. Sometimes they are friendly, sometimes aggressive, it depends on what way do you choose or if you know something about surfing. There are unspoken laws that you would better find about before you try mingle among these ocean creatures. If you will not take ones wave and leave enough space for the others it will be OK. If not, the worst thing it could happen is they surfing over your head and leaves you to sharks.

California surfing is a thing that once gets you; you will never get rid of again. Just check one of California surfing competitions; the true surfers are there, the best in the world. It is a spiritual experience related to the deep ocean and the adrenaline pumping through your veins.

Five Terrific Values When Traveling to Oahu

The Hawaiian Islands are recognized for their natural splendor, wonderful climate, and friendly people. It is also known as a really expensive place to reach and exist in. But in this article I will illustrate five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, and these are not mindless things to do like lying around the seaside (which you can do anyplace there is a beach and nice climate), but activities that you can do only on Oahu.

1. The first of the terrific values when traveling to Oahu will be the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. This is at no cost, and free tickets for the program are offered on a first come, first- served basis. It is really a serious and sobering experience, as you are actually standing over a grave site where 1177 men lost their lives. The addition in 1999 of the Battleship Missouri, the vessel where the formal signing of the “Instrument of Surrender” on September 2, 1945 ended the Second World War, is really a fitting bookend to the US involvement in the conflict. Over a million and one half visitors each year tour the site, so it is strongly recommended you get there early to beat the excursion buses.

2. A drive to Oahu’s North Shore, known as the surfing capital of the world, will simply amount to the cost of a rental car. All of the beaches in Hawaii are open, so it is possible for you to visit the home to the very best world-class surfers inhabit. Make sure to stop at the Banzai Pipeline, where surfers make their way through the center of the wave. This is an easy hour’s drive from Waikiki, and an area that far too many tourists neglect to see.

3. Another cheap opportunity is a trek up to the top of Diamond Head. Positioned at the Southeast coast of Oahu and overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki Beach, this $5 per car ($1 for pedestrians) experience may be done in two hours, and is approximately 1.4 miles in length. The path is cemented most of the way, and as I remember the top got quite steep. But the top presents a spectacular 365 degree view of Oahu and is a must-see for photography enthusiasts.

4. The Dole Plantation is a renovated, operational pineapple plantation that is devoted to the perpetuation of the Hawaiian agricultural heritage. This costs $8 for adults, $6 for children, and the tour takes guests from the point in time the Dole enterprise was a two-horse ranch to the most important producer and marketer of pineapples in the world. It also features a two acre, 1.7 miles of paths maze, recognized inside the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest maze around the world.

5. The last among the five terrific values when traveling to Oahu would be to top off the day with a two hour Waikiki evening dinner cruise. There are several to choose from, but can be purchased for as little as $125 per person. These let you get beautiful views of Waikiki and Diamond Head, along with a one hour picturesque ride up Mount Tantalus to view Honolulu by nighttime for a $22 ad on.

Now that you have five terrific values when traveling to Oahu, you should have an affordable solution to get around. The Bus will allow you to travel to all or any the favorite buying and beach areas, and they are available frequently. It is a good service for tourists who do not have autos to get about – it makes getting to places outside the immediate Waikiki district rather accessible. So enjoy your trip in Hawaii, and know that you won’t have to spend a fortune.

Water Sports In Maldives – Excitement Guaranteed!

Although the Maldives is not a destination which attracts surfers by the thousands, these tropical waters generate friendly waves which are ideal for novice surfers who just want to have a good time out among the waves. While many of the resorts located on the Maldivian Islands offer good quality Surfing Equipment at reasonable prizes, you do not have to worry about travelling with your own surf board. Windsurfing is another activity visitors could engage in while in the Maldives. As reasonable winds are on offer during most hours of the day, a trip to one of the wind surfing schools will give you the training you need to handle yourself well on the water.

Among the variety of water sports on offer, perhaps the most popular activity among visitors to the Maldives is snorkeling. While only certified divers are allowed to explore the farthest depths of the Maldivian seas, anyone can put on a pair of goggles and float over the shallow reefs where you can find all sorts of corals, starfish, crabs and other sea creatures that call these shallow waters their home. The level of visibility is simply amazing which enables visitors to see what lies beneath the waves with great detail. Most resorts located on these islands have their own reef where you can spend hours in the water admiring its beauty.

If you want to try your hand at something really challenging, Water Skiing is what you’re looking for. You will be able to book a water skiing trip from a local resort where you will get the chance glide on the water at break neck speeds which will give you a rush that is beyond words. Para-sailing, catamaran sailing and big game fishing are some of the other water related activities which you can also try your hand at while in Maldives.

John Keells Hotels Group is the proud owner of several Maldives hotels which are known to offer comfortable accommodation along with excellent service. These hotels also provide superb dining options and a host of modern amenities which is sure to make your Maldives travel experience a memorable one.

How East Coast Surf Became Popular

Have you been invited to an East Coast Surf? Surfers worldwide would travel and go the distance just to find that perfect wave that they can ride. Being on top or within those barrel-like, humongous waves is quite a different feeling. Being keen in surfing, you should know that surfing is more than just a sport but has a lot of factors to consider if you aim to have the best surfing experience ever. One of them is to select the right spot. With so many coastlines in the world, one can only wander but not wander enough. Each surfer can have a turf of his own but some of them stand out completely from the rest. Perhaps it is because of the crowd or the local vibe or it can be because of the fast changing of the weather or simply the capacity of the place to produce huge waves that make it more popular than others.

So what makes East Coast surf very much liked by many people? It can be claimed that there are a lot of prime spots that are a short distance from Boston in New England’s North Shore so even if you can’t find those giant tube waves that are often seen in Hawaii, you can still enjoy the ankle to chest-high rolling waves that are perfect for surfing. The North Jetty is considered the most popular since surfers only have to paddle shortly for them to find the best waves in the East Coast. Monster Hole, in the south of the inlet about 3/4 miles off the beach is where there are head high swells that give longboarders a good ride but it takes a good paddle before you end up in the breaking waters that’s why only locals can do the paddle. Heading towards Massachusetts, surfers would often find the longest surfable coastline without the crowd wherein beginners won’t have blending in concerns. With the rise of the surfing population through the years, a wide array of beach breaks, reefs and also points are now discovered and developed to provide good venues for the sport. Also called “Eastern Seaboard,” the East Coast offers many discoveries as it stretches from the Atlantic Ocean down towards Canada. All these beaches here offer consistent East Coast surf the entire year, providing surfers more time and chance to try their feet on their surfboards.

Surfing as a lifestyle and out of the patronage from surfers and surfing aficionados alike presents itself as a great venture that you will love more and more each day. So be among the many who have had the natural high from surfing. Try East Coast surf and find out why it has become so popular.

Surfing in Baja California Mexico!

Tired of the crowed surfing spots in San Diego? A short drive to Baja, Mexico may be the answer to your surfing woes. Just make sure that if you do intend to drive to Mexico that you get insured first to ensure that you have a worry free drive.

Before deciding on Baja area is most ideal for surfing, Mexican auto insurance should be purchased. In order to drive around, the laws in Mexico require foreign vehicles to have Mexican Car Insurance or the resources to pay damages instantly. Whether you want to cruise along or just ride on the surf circuit, you need Mexico Car Insurance protection. Look online for quality providers such as Mexican Insurance Store.com. Its not that expensive and good quality Mexican insurance can keep you out of jail.

Baja is the most northwestern state of Mexico. Just south of the border of the US state of California, it is still located on the California peninsula. On the east, it is bordered by the Gulf of California and on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the West as well as on the South. The weather in Baja is pleasant most times of the year, so chilling out with a beer in the shore is perfect to end your day with the waves.

When surfing in Baja during the months of October to April, the water can range from fifty to sixty degrees so using a body suit is probably a good idea. Summer temperatures can range from sixty to seventy degrees. There are many surfing spots in Baja, any of which can satisfy surfers of all skill levels. Here are some of them.

Surfing in Baja California Mexico!

Baja Malibu

This beach is not for beginners but will satisfy those who are looking for great rides through the tube. Just fifteen miles south of the border, the waves are best during medium to low tides and are present during the summer and winter.

San Miguel

San Miguel offers one of the best places for waves in Baja. About sixty-one miles from the border, the turn off to San Miguel is immediately before Ensenada. For a few dollars you can pitch a tent on the beach. There are facilities too for an RV which you can hook up for a fee. Showers, bars and restaurants are also available nearby.

Isla NatividadIsla

Natividad is not that easy to get to but offers one of the best surf spots in the world. It is only accessible by boat or plane. Because of its location, it is not crowded. There is also nothing else to do on Isla Natividad, so if the waves are not present don’t bother going. Waves are usually best during the summer and fall.

Jack Johnson Tickets – Jack Johnson Tailors Sixth Album, ‘To the Sea,’ to Fans

Jack Johnson released his sixth album, To the Sea, on Tuesday, June 1 and the characteristically mellow musician chatted about his expectations for the record with MTV News. Johnson told MTV News that he won’t even know about the response for To the Sea because he is going off the grid on a camping trip!

“Generally, I’ve been out and about when the records come out … [but] we’re about to leave for two weeks on a little camping trip, [and] that works better for me, a little bit. Get away from it and not think about it too much … Whenever friends’ albums come out, I go out and buy them. But when it’s my own, I don’t want to jinx it,” Johnson revealed.

Back in April, Johnson’s To the Sea scored the No. 1 spot on the iTunes albums chart based only on pre-orders so it is safe to say he can’t jinx the success of his sixth album! As opposed to album sales, Johnson is more concerned with relating to his many fans.

“I guess, with all the albums, I never used to think about it, but now there’s different songs that people will tell me, you know, ‘This song really means a lot to me after I lost a close friend,’ or, ‘This song is what we danced to a at our wedding’,” said Johnson before adding, “So I hope there’s songs on this—as I went through certain things in my life, whether they were heavy or just something fun, and wrote a song about it—hopefully, people can take those songs and they mean something and they can use it in their life.”

Although fans of the folk rocker were ready for him to release the follow-up to 2008’s platinum-selling Sleep Through the Static, Johnson didn’t anticipate releasing an album so soon. USA Today reports that Johnson planned on taking a hiatus from writing and recording in the wake of his father’s death last August after battling cancer. Johnson pays tribute to his late father on To the Sea, while the album also includes four love songs for his wife Kim and one aptly-titled track—”My Little Girl”—which was inspired by the couple’s third child. Fans with <a href=”http://www.stubhub.com/jack-johnson-tickets/”>Jack Johnson tickets</a> from <a href=”http://www.stubhub.com/”>StubHub.com</a> can hear Johnson’s new songs when his tour kicks off July 9.

It wouldn’t be a Jack Johnson album without an aquatic mention here or there, and the former professional surfer told USA Today, “I recently started to understand the significance of growing up surrounded by the ocean. The idea was of a father leading a son to the sea the way my father did. Until this album, I stayed away from any kind of oceanic references after being labeled this beach-boy surfer guy.”

After suffering from an accident at the famed Oahu’s Pipeline Masters when he was 17, Johnson earned a film degree from the University of California-Santa Barbara. He began to focus on a career in music after releasing the 2000 surf documentary Thicker Than Water with friends and professional surfers Emmett and Chris Malloy. Fellow laid-back musician G. Love took Johnson under his wing and the rest is, as they say, history.

Maui Resort Reviews: Kaanapali Beach Hotel

Kaanapali Beach Hotel is an Apple Vacations “Value Plus” location, making it one of the best bargains for Hawaii vacations. It lacks some of the luster of the more upscale resorts, but more than compensates in charm and value.

Activities in Hawaii

Hawaii vacations are chock-full of exciting, unique activities that any traveler would be foolish to skip out on!

First of all, you have to take advantage of the warm, clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. If you want to try something easy, then scuba, fishing, and snorkeling are ideal for low-energy fun. For the more adventurous, Surfing, JetSkiing, wind surfing, and motorboat rental are the high-octane activities to keep the adrenaline pumping.

In addition, Ka`anapali Beach Hotel offers plenty of Hawaiian cultural activities. If you have ever wanted to explore the Hawaiian lifestyle, this is your opportunity!

Amongst the activities, which are great for family fun, are ukulele lessons, nightly hula shows signaled by the blowing of conch shells, lei making accompanied by cultural storytelling, tours of the cultural gardens, Lauhala weaving, pineapple cutting, creating sand images, and Hawaiian music, which is present throughout your Hawaii vacations.

Another fantastic feature to this Maui resort is the terrific golfing located nearby at the Kaanapali North and South courses. These pair of championship-caliber courses provide enthusiasts of hour of fun, surrounded by the beautiful Hawaiian landscape.

Do you want to “shop ‘til you drop?” Then Ka`anapali Beach Hotel is perfect! It is close to Whalers Village Shopping Center & Museum, which offers some of the best shopping at art galleries, fashion and jewelry boutiques, and dining locations. Whalers Village also offers a history museum and renowned sand sculptor Billy Lee.

Dining Options

Ka`anapali Beach Hotel has three options for guest dining, along with plenty of off-site locations. Kaanapali Mixed Plate is an all-you-can-eat buffet for all three meals. Tiki Terrace serves Hawaiian style cuisine in an open-air environment. Finally, the Tiki Bar & Grill is a poolside spot featuring snacks, sandwiches, and exotic drinks made with tropical fruits.

Ka`anapali Beach Hotel is certainly a great destination for Hawaii Vacations!

Surfboard Fins: Everything a Surfer Needs to Know

Surfboards tend to come in several different shapes and sizes. When you walk into a surf store, you will likely see boards ranging from 5 to 12 feet long. In addition, you will find a wide assortment of fins for the surfboard?one, two, three, four, or even five of them in some cases. The fin is an essential component to your board. Without it, you won’t be able to catch or turn on a wave as easily. Each fin serves a different function. Long boards must have at least one fin placed directly in the middle of the tail of the board ; short boards should have at least two fins evenly placed at the tail.

Long boards are fastened with either one or three fins. One fin allows you a bit more maneuverability but less stability on the wave. If your intention is to become a crafty long boarder who can perform tricks, go with one fin. Or, if you would rather have fun and feel steady on your board, then three fins would be more suitable for you. Three fins give you more stability and less maneuverability. Most long boards have a front to back slide, which allows you to move your center fin forward or backward. The farther back your fin is, the looser your turn will be. At surfboard stores that sell a wide variety of center fins, you will find fins of many colors, shapes, and sizes. However, beginning surfers can go with a durable plastic fin before they concern themselves with the huge assortment of fins out on the market. When you are at the point in your career when you can purchase a new fin, consider buying a fin that will give you a decent amount of control. Follow this general rule: The bigger the fin is the more drag there will be, but your turn will also be more accurate and take less effort.

Short boards tend to have two, three, or four fins , but they can also have five fins. The dual-fin system provides a side-to-side center of balance , which gives short boarders the least amount of balance but the most maneuverability. The tri-fin system is the most common, as it provides good balance and reasonable control. This system is the best way to start your short-boarding career and therefore is recommended for beginning surfers. The quad fin provides a range of motion, allowing for calculated turns and exact maneuvers. Finally, the rare five-fin system is just a way of adding another versatile element to your board’s performance levels. Although rare, five-fin setups tend to provide surfers with the loosest maneuvers.

There are some really progressive experimental fins out there too. Some fins can be as long as 16 inches or have round funnels on them. When you’re at the store trying to understand why there are so many different kinds of fins, just remember that the standard fin system for both long and short boards is three. The one in the center is a thicker and longer than the two on the side. If you don’t like that system, then, by all means, experiment with the many combinations of fins until you find one that fits your style and maneuvering preferences.

Most fins can be screwed in and adjusted to the rider’s liking, using just a screwdriver or allen wrench. The common tri-fin system for short boarders is made by a company called FCS, or Fin Control System. FCS makes fin setups that are easy to remove and replace, which is great for experimentation or travel. In some cases, surfboards will come with fins that are glassed on, which means you will not be able to move or remove them. Those fins are there to stay! Glassed-on fins provide the best stability, but little versatility. Buy a board with glassed-on fins only if you know the fin system suits you.

Is there any webpage you can recommend me to learn about surfing?

I want to learn about boards, fins, technique, etc.

A website may not be the best resouce but it cant hurt to have a read before you get started. A quick google search found this http://www.surfing-waves.com/beginners_guide_surfing.htm

A website may give you some information but you should go into some of your local surf stores and talk to the guys in there, they will be able to provide you the best information, how to start, which board, tips and techniques etc. Might also pay to at least get one lesson too where the instructor will go over some of the fundimentals.
