PARENTS! What would you do if your teen was doing this?

Well I know a 17 yr old guy and he spends like 12-14 hrs a day online…mostly in a chat room but also youtube and myspace or just Surfing. Anyway, all of his “frinds” came from this chat room where they are all ppl he has never met and probably never will. He has no real life friends and has never had a real gf…only internet gf’s? He even goes to school online becasue he can’t handle a reg. school. He wants to be a rockstar someday and plays the guitar but is so lazy he sometimes doesn’t even want to go to lessons. He isn’t doing well in school becasue he thinks he will be a musician and won’t need school anyway. He has many emotional problems but refuses meds and no longer feels therapy is useful so doesn’t go. What would you do? He stays up until 4-5 am online and is lazy most of the day. What are your thoughts on this and does he have much of a future with this behavior? Thanks

Either he goes to school or he gets a job. No exceptions.

Some Advice for New Composers on How Music Theory Can Enhance Your Songwriting

Putting together a song is an extra special way of attaining catharsis, though the process itself can be just as excruciating as the load of burden being purged. To facilitate the job of penning a song, realize promptly that there are rudiments and methods in place to get those feelings on ‘paper.’ I can already sense the frustration at the concept of having to hold back creativity by abiding to a structure. Breathe, chill out and realize that these are more so guidelines that can be bent and smashed as you see fit. Over time, you’ll find your creative abilities take hold and all the rudiments will run on autopilot. As fun as it might be to stumble around in the dark, trying to figure things out on your own, learning will make life a whole lot easier!

Regardless of the fact that you’re artistically gifted, you’re here to improve as a songwriter Skill makes up for a lot though passion will help drive you through the ruts and help you unearth the means to make your idea a certainty. Aside talent and passion, honesty is going to help make your songs truly your own. Without it, you’re just going to come off as one more artsy-hack trying to fake it. It’s this directness, and readiness to share all that you are to the world that will help you relate with your listeners. Your audience will feel the passion in your songs if you sing it like you mean it.

Lyricists and poets aren’t always one in the same. Most beginners are going off of their teenage, high school experiences writing poems for English class, and believe that their prime expertise qualifies them to create songs. This is a good starting point, though you’ll be kicking yourself when you realize that you’ve written a splendid line and can’t find anything to rhyme it to, shortly in a verse. Pause for a moment, and realize that not only can a song chock full of rhymes sound amateur and repetitive, it is constraining, and in time, grating.

Song lyrics, or just the words themselves, can bend and move to accommodate the music that goes along with it. You’ve probably heard two unbelievably un-rhyme-able words somehow strung together in a song or two. This is a consideration for the writer. Also realize, and it’s best to acknowledge this now, that certain lines and words just don’t want to fit with the music, and you’ll find that much of your time will be spent rehashing and redoing all your work. As I mentioned before, your passion will push you through the trials and bring your ideas to life.Having to write about should never be a problem Unless you’re a heartless robot, you feel emotion on a day by day basis. If you walk out of the house, surf the internet, turn on the t.v., read, or god-willing, have an authentic conversation with at least one person at some point in the week, you should have stories to tell. If it’s even mildly inspiring that you feel an itch to record it down, write. Songs are finest when it’s about what you’re most familiar with, and there’s nothing you will know better than your history and feelings. Your first labors may sound plain and childish at first though this is where your originality will grow from. Your special technique will develop with time and repetition.

All I’ve mentioned so far has been motivational, nice, and inspiring stuff that can be drawn from inside yourself. Every passion, your talent, history, passion, and basic understanding of writing lyrics will take you far. Now, let’s step it up a little bit.

What makes a song a song is its arrangement. Songs often consist of an introduction, a verse, a chorus, an additional verse, an added chorus, and a coda ( aka: Outro ). You can see it as the organization of a book or story, though it’s best to do so only temporarily, since not all songs will include a definite story arc, or not have a story, at all. The song composition itself, can be altered to your needs, though the structure follows the song’s melody, which is established at the beginning of the song.

Uh-oh, ‘melody,’ you say, what is that! It’s alright, it’s much easier than you believe it to be! It’s the soul, the very essence of the song. That portion of your favorite song that you can hum,and someone on the street can hear and know, right away;that’s the melody. Establish a rhythm and pattern to form a basic melody, by repeating a line from the verse. This, in tremendously simple terms, is going to be your melody. From here on in, you will be forming following lines, verses, and choruses based on this melody, and complimenting it accordingly. It is also at this point that I advocate that yet another, very valuable tool to add to your toolbox as a songwriter, is a little music theory. There are definitely hundreds of hit songs produced with no a simple grasp of music but we’re here to make the process easier. Understanding music theory will help you share your ideas with other musicians.

As great as it may be to reach into your heart and soul, it’s best to know that unless you’re a talented virtuoso , which is not a requirement, it will take dedication, practice, and time. Express yourself wholeheartedly by believing in your natural talents and sharing yourself wholeheartedly. Snags will come along the way, though your passions will help you push through them, and convey all that you mean to your audience. Each emotion felt, and adventure tackled, is a muse, worth sharing with the world, and with just a little bit of correct training, and a grasp of standard musical dogma you can sharpen your skills and be a winning songwriter.

Surf City alive and well in Huntington Beach

Most baby boomers will remember that teen-age anthem “Surf City” and its promise of “two girls for every boy.”

In truth, the male/female ratio was a bit more even than that, but Jan and Dean’s teen anthem called “Surf City” put themselves and Huntington Beach on the map. In those days it was hard to distinguish musically between Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys – but there was no mistaking the message both groups were sending: California in general – and Surf City in particular – were the places to be.

The surfing culture that launched this musical phenomenon still exists to various degrees up and down the California coastline. But no one place comes closer to the real thing than Huntington Beach, the undisputed surfing capital of the world and the place many think best epitomizes the mythical beach paradise described in “Surf City.”

You’ll, of course, get an argument from Santa Cruz, which lays claim to bigger waves and more Surfing History than its friendly rival to the south. Santa Cruz also likes to promote itself as Surf City but that city has one significant disadvantage: Dean Torrence – yes, THAT Dean – is still hanging 10 musically around Huntington Beach and is, in fact, on the Executive Committee of the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau. So take that, Santa Cruz!

With 8.5 miles of uninterrupted, incredibly wide beaches, it’s not hard to see why Huntington Beach has attracted L.A. beach-goers for decades. These sparkling sand beaches stretch so far that it all seems far removed from the L.A. megalopolis — when in fact it’s part of it. Even more interesting is how the Main Street and pier areas have retained their charm even though they are just blocks from the endless subdivisions and freeways of Orange County.

We don’t surf, but our trip to Huntington Beach offered us a chance to walk right into a three-dimensional model of Jan and Dean’s song, right down to what seemed like “two girls for every boy.” While the beaches just south of the pier were populated on this particular weekend with families and lots of young people, the surfers were congregated just north of the pier where we could get a bird’s-eye view as dozens of them tackled the modest but apparently exhilarating waves.

For us, creature comforts were important – we weren’t exactly looking to camp on the beach – so the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort proved the perfect choice for accommodations. Reminiscent of the fine beach resorts you find in Hawaii, the Hilton is the only high-rise hotel in Huntington Beach and our sixth-floor room offered a commanding view of the beach. Sitting out on our lanai we could see far to both the north and south, and it was interesting to observe the rhythms of beach life.

During the day, families would stake out their parcels, many of them erecting partial tents, others content to enjoy the sun full-on. As sunset approached, fires could be seen up and down the coast as visitors took advantage of the city’s 600 fire rings for cooking or just a beach campfire. Then by morning it was all gone, and out came the city crews to spruce up the beach for another day and another 30,000 visitors – the average for Huntington Beach.

The luxurious rooms at the Hilton are known for the especially comfortable beds, but you’ll also find many other fun things to help you enjoy your stay. We enjoyed spending time poolside where the palm trees and gardens created just the right beach resort atmosphere. Instead of opaque walls, the resort courtyard has a plexi-glass wall on the beach side, allowing full view of the beach while you enjoy the pool. The sound system helps set the mood with, you guessed it, Jan and Dean belting out the hits. On this particular weekend the resort seemed fairly family-friendly – a lot of guests had brought their kids.

This resort would be especially good for teaching the kids how to surf. There seemed to be several classes offered, along with equipment rentals and we overheard one family discussing how that was one of their priorities while visiting “Surf City.”

Of course, there is also a lot to see and do once you leave the grounds of the hotel. The beach is just across the Pacific Coast Highway and running along the beach is a pathway that offers an ongoing parade of visitors – not just surfers, but youngsters, oldsters, families, couples and a cross-section of anybody and everybody. On this weekend there was a steady stream of 60’s muscle cars cruising the Pacific Coast Highway. The latest and most expensive sports cars were in abundance as well.

A short walk north from the hotel is the pier and the downtown area of Huntington Beach – just a few blocks of stores altogether, but a definite blast from the past. Surf shops abound – indeed, there is an International Surfing Museum to peruse — while several restaurants and outdoor cafes add to the festive feeling. Shoppers are most often clad in bathing suits – or maybe cover-ups for the more modest – and the feeling is pure California beach town. The boutiques here tend to feature simple, youth-oriented fashions. Rock music blares from one or two of the stores, while the occasional surfer pedals through town with a board three times as long as his bike.

For such a small downtown area, the restaurant selection is wide and varied. Beer pubs, sushi bars, fish tacos, Asian, Thai, Italian, Hawaiian – it’s all represented within just a couple of blocks. On this weekend the most popular place in town seemed to be the Sugar Shack Café, reputed to have breakfasts that are well worth a significant wait to get in the door.

Down by the pier, row after row of volleyball nets are in place and young guys and gals are usually out there taking full advantage of them – even on weekdays. Restaurants and surf shops are also located right out by the beach where you can rent a variety of beach toys including surf boards, boogie boards, and a side selection of bicycles and other vehicles to pedal up and down the beach walk.

With just a little investigation, visitors will find that Huntington Beach features more than just beaches and surfing. The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, for example, is a bird-lover’s paradise comprising 330 acres of coastal wetlands. Nearly 200 bird species are documented here each year, and the reserve is open to foot traffic with parking just off the Pacific Coast Highway.

If you’re planning a family vacation that is to include many of the Southern California theme parks, most are within easy driving distance of Huntington Beach. Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure are 16 miles away, Knotts Berry Farm is 14 miles and Knott’s Soak City is just 14 miles from Huntington Beach. Shopping is close by, too – both South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island are within easy driving distance.

But a trip to Huntington Beach is really all about the beach – a beach that is an average of 100 yards wide and that seems to be endless. Whether you stay at the Hilton or drop in just for a day of beach fun, this part of Southern California still delivers on the legacy created by Jan and Dean — even if you’re now married, have teenagers of your own, and no longer care if there are “two girls for every boy.”

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Huntington Beach is located in Orange County, about an hour’s drive south from Los Angeles.

WHAT: Huntington Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in California and now is home to the US Open Surfing Championships. The town and area retain the flavor of the 60’s when surfing was hot in music and movies.

WHEN: Any time of year. The climate is sunny and comfortable year-round.

WHY: A chance to enjoy one of California’s best beaches and soak up a completely different culture while also enjoying a stay at a luxury resort.

HOW: For more information about Huntington Beach, visit the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau website at www.surfcityusa.com or phone 800-729-6232.
What do u think of my beach shorts? Are they too feminine?

i went to a departmental store in a mall the other day, and decided to buy a pair of surf shorts. The men’s boardshorts all looked so baggy n long, therefore i decided to be daring n opted for something shorter n skimpier. Therefore i chose this pair from the girl’s section.

Its Billabong (Australia). Gonna wear them to the beach, to chill out with my gal. Not for windsurfing though as i don’t know how to.

Do u think it looks good?

http://i38.tinypic.com/2vlnsdk.jpg

http://i37.tinypic.com/2n23hjb.jpg

Uhh yea?

I dont know how much more feminine you could get, they are girls shorts. hah this is kind of a redundant question.

But i guess it looks like you shave your legs so i dont know the difference

Plus dont you think all your “stuff” will be hanging out, that is just gross

Learning to Surf – to do list & top preparations

1. Find a surf spot with a beginner friendly beach preferably with warm water and without crowds. A sand bottom beach break with long gentle rolling white water is perfect for a first timer. Costa Rica is an ideal spot for learning to surf. Another good idea would be to book a trip at a surf camp where you can get specialized progressive lessons, daily guidance and a emersion environment.

2. Take at least 1-2 lesson before you jump in to it. Make sure to find a qualified surf instructor who has at least 8-10 years Surfing experience and at least 2 years teaching experience. Surfing can be dangerous and without basic board management, crowd awareness and ocean knowledge instruction a fun day at the beach can turn in to trip to the hospital or worse.

3. Pick a proper surf board to learn on. Usually when you start out its on a bigger board or long board 8-10ft and as you improve you can move down in size.

4. Start working on dropping any extra unnecessary pounds if you need to. The lighter and fitter you show up the easier it will be for you as well as your instructor.

5. A simple fitness regimen 3-4 weeks prior will do wonders for your stamina. Push ups, pull ups, crunches, and lying back extensions are great, if you work with weights utilize circuit training. work more medium to light weights with high repetitions progressively decreasing rest time between sets, also give some attention to your posterior deltoids.

6. Upper body cardio is king. The hardest part about learning to surf is the demanding paddling. Any type of cardio is good, but you should do some upper body cardio such as paddling, Rows, boxing aerobics, Swimming laps etc.

7. Get a balance board. Indo boards are great for practicing weight distribution and relaxed balancing. They also will help get your legs toned and in shape. They come with dvd’s to show you how. You can do 10-15 minutes a day in your living room on the carpet in front of the TV easily. You should be able to find one at any board sport or sporting good store.

8. Make sure you can hold your breath for at least 20 seconds. When you start you will be in shallow water(about 4-6 feet deep), but a wipe out can still put you under for a few seconds and the more breath you have the more relaxed you’ll be.

9. Flexibility: If you do yoga that’s great or just a simple 10 min daily stretching regimen focusing on limbering your legs, chest, arms, and back

10. Educate your self. Go google crazy. There is tons of info online about surfing tips, ocean knowledge, surf reports, surf equipment. .
Pura Vida & Aloha

Best Selling Artist Of The Sixties

Deciding upon the best selling artist of the 60s is very difficult, there were so many greats. Music was the life raft for the public and artist alike, a connection to the world at large, there is no surprise these artist top the list. The best artists of the 60s is led by the Beatles one of the hottest properties on the recording market with at least 500 million in sales during the 60s era. This young group became a household word around the world with hits like A Hard Days Night, Beatle Mania was everywhere. In the Jazz and swing category was the melodious voice of Bing Crosby. The electrifying Michael Jackson holds the record as the King of Pop and Madonna the “Material Girl,” ranks among the top ten.

The best artists of the 60s sang pop, rock and jazz, their music as diversified as their voices. Elvis the King of Rock and Roll, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were burning the charts in the 60s. Elton John, Frank Sinatra and Julio Iglesias were all hot properties, all extremely talented people surfing the airways, and some the movie screens. The “First Lady of Soul,” Aretha Franklin was topping the charts the show stopping swing of the Temptations had the world standing at attention while Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix wowed crowds around the world.

Jackie Wilson was burning the charts in the 60s with his soulful sound. More best selling artist in the sixties were Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding and the rocking Dr of Soul James Brown. The era of free love and wood stock was there with the music of Mick Jagger, Janice Joplin and Marvin Gaye. The world listened to the deep vocal sound of The Righteous Brothers, The Who, Johnny Cash, David Bowie and the Zombies. There was no doubt the best selling artists in the 60s were good but only time knew their music would transcend decades, lighting the imagination of future generations.

Certainly there is debate over the best selling artist in the 60s but the music of the artist listed still plays a significant part in the music world. The 60s was an era of great change and music was no different. The best selling artists in the 60s caught the mood of the time and a new political consciousness. A change in public awareness was flooding the airways and the tone of music was a leading influence.

About the Author

My Brothers “Surf Music”?

My brother is a surfer, so he listens to what he calls “surf music”. The only artists i know he listens to are Jack Johnson Nine Inch Nails and Switchfoot….. i really like his music, but dont know the titles of the songs or artists. So all in all, what are some good “surf artists”?

Surf music started in the late 50s, became hugely popular in the 1960s and saw a big revival in the 80s.
Surf music has blended with rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, garage, spaghetti western (euro trash), and tiki lounge (hawaiian) music over the years. It can have a really hard aggressive edge or it can be very relaxing.

Early pioneers are Dick Dale, Link Wray, and Duane Eddy.

Surf music seeks to emulate the raw power of the ocean. It does this with the use of staccato guitar riffs, power chords, and glissandos (rapid descending pitches). It also strives for the exotic, often using arabic, latin, and other “forgeign” melodies.

Beach music is totally different- like the beach boys and Frankie Valley- blah.

While surf music is declining again in the US, it is still very popular in Mexico, Japan, Europe, and basically the rest of the world. Recent (well, faily recent) U.S. surf bands might include the butthole surfers, the aqua velvets, the tikitones, the blue hawiians, the aquabats, los straightjackets, Southern Culture On the Skids (SCOTS). Surf bands tend to come and go rather quickly- but they usually leave behind good stuff. Some of the original surf bands from the sixties are still touring though.

Jack Johnson is not really surf but the mellow attitude makes him a good match to mix in with surf. Nine inch nails is really good too, but not really surf either.

Check out this excellent site for an overview of the surf genre and follow the links to other surf websites…

http://trustarvibrations.blogspot.com/

Dig back far enough in this site to sample one of the mexican or japanese compilations to get a tasty overview- you’ll probably be hooked right away. Might I suggest searching the site for these compilations:

iphone or blackberry curve 8310?

im thinking of one of these phones
what are the audience of both phones?
pros and cons?
for a teen?

also i already have an ipod touch and ipod classic so im good with the music/video part

and hows the internet surfing on the curve?

Definitely the iPhone, plain and simple. The iPhone is so much more than a phone, and is superior to any phone currently out there. It’s fully touch screen for starters, a feature that still no other phone has. You can hack into the iPhone and install many, many more features and applications on it. And Apple comes out with updates for the iPhone that enable it to have smarter, better features, so it never goes out of style. They constantly come out with improvements that can be downloaded into your iPhone within minutes. You can’t do this with any other cell phone. Hope this helps…

Listen to websites music and radio on the internet

I remember when I had my first internet connection on and I would just delve on to any site that I could find while surfing. Because I was very much interested in music, I would be on music websites all day long. One of my favorite websites is CDbaby.com. Since I discovered it back in 2005, it was different that it is now, sporting a different design. What I loved about it is that you could listen to practically huge parts of songs that would go up to maximum 2 minutes, before you would purchase them. This made me very happy, as I was able to discover a lot of good music and know what I am buying before paying for it.

Another place you can listen to music is Rhapsody. I am living in Romania and cannot use it now, for it is not available in my country. But I used a tool that hid my IP and could finally listen to music on it. The joy here is that you can listen to full songs that are bitrated at 128k. Not bad. The website has an incredible collection and you will definitely find what you’re looking for here.

Another place to listen to music online is iTunes. An amazing library of over 11 million songs will definitely find your favorite one among them. The great use of such websites is that they will help you know how the music you want to get sounds, before actually paying for it.

If you are looking for a good radio station that you will be able to listen online, then I recommend you the Hearts of Space. This radio on the internet is very much famous and since it has been airing, it has changed the way people perceive the radio and also the music that you can listen to it. Basically, it is a music radio that features no commercials and only the best music that you will ever hear in your life.

There are many artists that you will not know about when you will take your first listen of it and slowly, in time, as you will get accustomed to this type of music, you will see that the music you once took the time to listen was crappy (usual crappy radio music, TV music videos, etc) and that this is the music that really matters and should be extolled.

In order to listen to this type of music, you require having a good attention span, patience and having a thing for mysterious music. Some of my favorite artists number Jeff Pearce, Ashera, Hammock, Sounds from the ground, Soundflowers, William Basinsky and many, many more. I discovered Max Richter recently and if you love modern classical music, this is the best artist out there, along with Jóhann Jóhannsson that you could check out.

We show you some reasons why the PC is still worth considering when you are looking for a gaming rig. Ideally of course, we will want to have both console machines and gaming PCs to play all our favorite games. However, what if this is not an option? Think that it’s a no-brainer that consoles are your definite choice for a lean mean gaming machine? Well, think again! We give you some reasons why the PC still holds its ground.

Costs

At first glance, consoles which fetch a price tag of a few hundred dollars definitely look comparatively cheaper than your PC which cost around a thousand or more bucks. However there are some ‘hidden costs’ you may need to consider before reaching your conclusion.

1. Upgrade costs

Generally, consoles cannot be ‘upgraded’ without changing the whole unit. On the other hand, you can always upgrade your PC by purchasing more memory, storage, or changing to a better graphic card. PC

2. HDTV display

To enjoy the fluid and realistic graphics your console can offer, you often need to get a HDTV. That will easily cost you a few hundred bucks more. Now compare that with the cost of LCD monitors which are capable of running even higher resolutions.

3. Online service charges

Wanna take the competition online? Some consoles charge a monthly service fee for their multiplayer platform. For the PC, there are more free-to-play options e.g. setting up your own LAN or free MMORPG servers.

Availability of titles

In the market today, game development has gone more cross platform. You can often find a PC counterpart for game titles on the PS3 and Xbox 360. While there are exclusive titles released on the consoles, the PC has its fair share of ‘PC only’ games, particularly MMORPGs (think World of Warcraft). The fact is, PCs are generally capable of running games at higher resolution and texture quality than consoles.
PC gamers can express their ingenuity by modifying games and their save files, edit maps and do custom patches. These are often done by fans and provided free for other gamers to enjoy. Not to forget online chatting and social networking (yes, Facebook addicts, you know who you are!). You don’t have to grab that few thousand dollars Alien to enjoy high quality PC gaming. Getting a custom built PC can save you a lot of money for similar levels of performance. And that’s what we are here for.

Also, there is no need to get the best performance and most expensive option for every component.
